WHAT'S HAPPENING - NPS
November 2, 2020
Growing, Learning and Achieving Together
Dear Nighthawk families,
… and just like that we are into November! We have experienced another dramatic change in the weather over the past two weeks and have even had our first snowfall of the season. As we enter cold and flu season, we are requiring our students to dress appropriately for the weather when going out for recess. We would appreciate your support in making sure that your children come to school properly attired for the colder, wetter season that is upon us!
October was a busy month around Newburgh Public School. The Week of October 5-9, 2020 was Fire Safety and Prevention Week, and we have carried out three Fire Drills and changed some of our protocols in order to keep our students and staff as safe as possible. We held a “Black and Orange” Spirit Day on October 30th in order to celebrate the Fall season and Halloween. So many students showed their spirit by dressing in black and orange while classes celebrated the event with visual arts activities, science experiments, music, movies and treats for all! A huge shout out to staff who organized a terrific day for our students!
November is looking to be equally as busy with some very special events, ceremonies and celebrations happening all month. November is Indigenous Education Month, and we will be acknowledging and celebrating Indigenous people and culture through our daily announcements and in the classroom through our Social Studies and History/Geography curricula. On November 11, 2020, students will be participating in Remembrance Day Activities in their classes and as a whole school. In classes, teachers will be providing stories and lessons regarding the significance of Remembrance Day in an age appropriate and meaningful context. At 10:45, the entire school will meet outside by the flag to participate in a traditional ceremony to commemorate our fallen heroes. At all times, students will be wearing masks and practising appropriate social distancing. During the week of November 23-27, 2020, all students in the LDSB will be participating in a Census Study to identify and eliminate discrimination and bias from schools and classrooms. The data collected through the census will help us learn more about our students – their backgrounds, experiences and needs. All information on individual students will remain confidential. On November 20th, 2020, families will receive Student Progress Reports which are designed to show a student’s development of learning skills and work habits during the fall of the school year as well as a student’s general progress in working towards the achievement of the curriculum expectations in all subjects. Please feel free to contact your child's teachers if you have any questions about their progress and achievement.
We have a couple of important reminders for all families:
Data Verification Forms
If you have not already done so, please return your data verification forms to the school as soon as possible. It is absolutely critical that we have current and accurate contact information for all families in our school. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Computer/Technology Acceptable Use Agreement
Each year, all students and their parents must have agreed to and "signed" a Technology Acceptable Use agreement in order to access school technology. The agreement can be found in the School Day account for each of your children (this is the account that you have used to order Hot Lunch and Milk). We have sent out a number of reminders, but we are still missing agreements for some students. The final deadline is November 9th, 2020. After this date, any student who has not indicated agreement to our policy will not be permitted to use technology at the school. Please sign off on this agreement as soon as possible to ensure the continuity of your child’s learning. Please contact the school if you require assistance or a new Secure Access Code for School Day. Thank you!
As always, the health and safety, along with the wellness and mental health of our school community, is our number one priority as we move forward. Please continue to make your own wellness and the wellness of your family a priority.
Take good care everyone!
