Child Outcomes Summary (COS) Training

The Child Outcomes Summary process is a required team report compiled by the early learning intervention specialist for students on their roster who have a preschool individual education program (IEP).

Initial Child Outcomes Summary Training

The Initial Child Outcomes Summary Training consists of Part 1 and Part 2. Participants must register for and complete both parts in order to be considered fully trained. This is a required training for all early learning intervention specialists who support and provide services to children with Individual Education Plans (IEPs). See additional details and registration below for Part 1 and 2.

Team Child Outcomes Summary Training

The Team Child Outcomes Summary Training consists of Part 2. Participants must register as a team, please be sure that a team is registered for those programs with staff taking the Initial COS training. Teams should consist of at least an administrator or supervisor and intervention specialist(s). Other members to consider would include related service providers, preschool psychologists and general education teachers within inclusive classrooms. This session will allow teams to practice reviewing completed forms and develop a plan to support staff and program improvement. Please see additional details and registration below in Part 2.

Child Outcomes Summary - Part 1 -3hrs

Part 1 consists of two pre-recorded sessions that you may take at your own pace. All activities and reflections in each session must be completed before moving on to the next one. These sessions include foundational information required for preschool intervention specialists as they complete the Child Outcomes Summary Process for students on their roster who have a preschool individual education program (IEP). They are also great for anyone wanting in-depth knowledge about the Child Outcomes Summary process. Links to the recordings and activities will be provided upon registration.

  • The Essential Knowledge and Skills session gives a brief overview of the Child Outcomes Summary Process and the five essential knowledge and skills needed to complete the process.
  • The Process and the Form session provides participants with an understanding of the COS process including required timelines and how to complete the form.

Part 2 allows participants working in a team to practice compiling data for an entry Child Outcomes Summary report. The team will also review a sample Child Outcomes Summary report for quality, look at sample data, and determine follow-up support for staff. This training must be completed in conjunction with Part 1 for new early childhood intervention specialists. Early learning leaders / supervisors and their related service support staff should attend as a team in order to refresh their understanding and plan for the continued support of their new/ veteran staff.
