The CityLab Connect

Week of September 26th, 2022

Newsletter Takeover:

Each week, a different CityLab staff member will be taking over the newsletter. This week’s guest writer is Dustin Good. As a founding teacher of CityLab, Dustin has been involved with building and growing the campus over the past 6 years. In his new role as Instructional Lead Teacher, Dustin has worked to create and maintain systems that support student engagement, academic achievement, and extracurricular involvement. See his message to CityLab students, families, and staff below:

A Message from Mr. Good

It’s a pleasure to be the guest writer for this week’s newsletter. I’d like to take this opportunity to share with you a few of the experiences CityLab students have had since the beginning of the year, as well as some upcoming campus events.

Field Studies:

In keeping with our school’s vision, which is to use the City of Dallas as our classroom, students have participated in a number of field studies and off-campus activities.

Senior Meeting at Dallas Central Library and AT&T Discovery District (September 9)

Our counselor Ms. Crawford held a meeting with CityLab Seniors to review high school transcripts, college applications, scholarships, and graduation requirements. Following the meeting, students had an opportunity to explore one of Downtown’s newest public spaces: The AT&T Discovery District.

Dallas Park(ing) Day (September 15)

Park(ing) Day is part of a global event to temporarily repurpose curbside parking into spaces for public use. To celebrate the event, CityLab practicum students spent the day at Downtown’s Pioneer Plaza with their CTE pathway teachers. Students not currently enrolled in a practicum course were also able to experience Park(ing) Day through grade level rotations.

CityLab 5 Year Anniversary Celebration (September 19)

After spending the Summer at the Architecture and Design Exchange (ADEX), a comprehensive display of student projects was moved to the first floor of Dallas City Hall. Members of the CityLab Foundation, representatives from the City of Dallas, and CityLab staff joined a group of our students to celebrate our school’s first 5 years.

Envision Dallas Tour (September 21)

Ms. Hardaway’s Junior Architecture students participated in a site visit to Envision Dallas, the DFW’s largest employer and service provider for the blind and visually impaired. During the tour, students learned the ways that design can help improve independence and mobility for those with disabilities and will now incorporate their learning in an upcoming architecture project.

2022 CityLab Summit (November 17 and 18)

The annual CityLab Summit invites students, teachers, families, and business professionals to engage in a discussion about our city and the places we live, work, learn, and play. This year’s theme is “Greening Dallas Sustainability”, and will focus on issues including environmental justice, sustainable development goals and strategies, climate change and global warming, air and water quality, and the future role of renewable energy sources. The keynote discussion, held at Fair Park’s Briscoe Carpenter Auditorium, features Dr. Adrian Parr, the current Dean of the College of Design at the University of Oregon and will also include other industry professionals as well as CityLab students. Click here to learn more about this event.

We have plenty more field studies and experiences planned for our students throughout the year. If you are interested in supporting as a parent chaperone, please contact me by email at dugood@dallasisd.org. District volunteers are required to create an account through the Voley system.
