Dear Open High Family,
It's a busy week at Open!
THE SOL WRITING END-OF-COURSE (EOC) ASSESSMENT will be administered to ALL eleventh graders on Tuesday, March 14 (Multiple Choice), Wednesday, March 15, (Direct Writing), and Thursday, March 16 (Makeup Day). On Wednesday, March 22, 11th graders will also take the SAT EXAM at Randolph Community Center from 8:30 - 12:30. It is essential that students arrive on time to all these tests. More information can be found in the letter. In addition, the VDOE is requiring us to administer an Integrated Reading and Writing Field Test to ALL eleventh graders on Monday, March 27 (This is a change of date.) While this test is mandatory, the results are not reported.
ECA INTERVIEWS are scheduled for Monday, Thursday, and Friday. Please see Micah about your scheduled time.
TUTORING will resume this week! Too many students who need support do not take advantage of this opportunity to receive one-on-one assistance. Students can also stay after school on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays just to complete work before going home, even if they don't need tutoring. Snacks are provided. See you in Room 209!
Come find out how to be a part of the Mayor's Youth Academy (MYA) summer work based-learning program. Representatives from the program are visiting Open HS on Monday, March 13 during lunch.
It's MARCH MADNESS at OHS! Families compete by answering trivia questions for Family Cup points. Mike's Family was eliminated last week by Chad's Family. Here's who's up this week:
- March 13, 1:15 pm -- Staff vs. Caroline's Family
- March 15: 2:15 pm -- Mary vs. Brigette's Family
- March 17: 3:15 pm -- Lorah vs. Lucy's Family
AP SATURDAY STUDY SESSIONS are off to a great start! Each week, students who attend will be entered into a raffle for gift cards c/o the PTSA! The next sessions in Math, Art, and Spanish are scheduled for March 18. See the flyer below for details. Students should sign up here AP 2022023 Student Pre-registration Form as soon as possible, especially if they require transportation. WE STRONGLY ENCOURAGE ALL AP STUDENTS TO ATTEND THESE SESSIONS WITH NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED TEACHERS! Students can review lessons that will be taught here: AP NMSI- Saturday Student Folders. Students should bring their charged Chromebooks and chargers to each session. As a reminder, RPS pays for all AP exams, and all enrolled students are expected to sit for the exam and do their best. For more information on Advanced Placement courses see the RPS AP 4 All web page.
A number of our students will also be participating in the Regional Teen Summit at the Convention Center on Saturday, March 18. This exciting event brings together students from across the metro region for a full day of experiences that amplify teen voices about topics that matter. We still have a few spots left. See Clary if you're interested. Permission slips are due by Wednesday at the latest. Food and transportation are provided, and all students will recieve volunteer hours for attending.
Get your tickets to PROM! Students from all grades are encouraged to attend this event!
As always, be well, be safe, and be open!

Student Opportunities!
The 2023 OLIVER HILL/SAMUEL TUCKER PRE-LAW INSTITUTE reaches future lawyers at an early age to provide them with exposure and opportunity to explore the legal profession, all at NO COST to the participants. For one week, students are introduced to the legal profession by living on a college campus and attending a number of mock classes (complete with overnight reading assignments) and seminars on career opportunities in the law, test taking strategies, and the college admissions process. The students meet with law school professors, judges, guest lecturers, and state and local bar association members. This year’s Institute will be held Sunday, July 9, 2023, to Friday, July 14, 2023 at the University of Richmond. Visit application here.
Also check out the Counselor Connection, OHS Future Center and Open High School Google Classrooms where opportunities are regularly posted. We want to connect all our students with opportunities of interest, so please ask for our help!
