Summer Reading Special Edition
Build a Better World
When I asked kids in Mrs. Williams library classes, "What could you build to make the world better?", I got great answers: an animal shelter, a water powered jet engine, a more comfortable chair for old people. And I got one really surprising answer: a forest. This reminded me of the wonderful story The Man Who Planted Trees by Jean Giono in which an old man plants the seeds of trees as he goes through his days. Although his work begins to pay off within a few years as animals and other plants begin to move into the once barren land, he knows he will not live to see the mature forest. He plants anyway secure in the knowledge that his creation will benefit generations to come.
There are many ways to build and many ideas about what will make our world a better place. This summer, I hope our kids will be inspired by their reading to think of themselves as the inventors and builders of their own world.
Our schedule is bursting with activities for kids and their caregivers this year. In addition to some great performers and presenters, we'll continue our popular "Stories at Food for Kids" program. For those who want to give themselves a bit of a reading challenge, we've started a "Reading Without Walls" book club. You'll also see that we've added a summer session to our Building Blocks preK programming. For six weeks, from July 5th to August 17th, our smallest patrons and their caregivers will be exploring our local parks, going on field trips and doing some fun hands-on learning.
The reading program itself is getting a high-tech makeover with the addition of the Beanstack reading program. Kids who sign up can log their reading, earn badges, get suggestions for their next book, check on upcoming events and more. You can connect to Beanstack by scrolling down to the button on our website. And never fear, you can still use a paper reading log and stay old-school.
We encourage kids of all ages to march with our float in the Whipple City parade on June 16th and come Build a Better Village and sign up for Summer Reading on June 17th.
If all goes well, the library's own building project will be finished the first week in July and we'll all be ready to get out there and build a better world.
