Wildcat Newsletter - April 10th, 2020

Update From the Principal

Dear Wildcat Families,

This has been a challenging week. While not unexpected, the announcement that schools will be closed through the remainder of the year has left us all with heavy hearts. We are all grieving the loss of time with our students and families, the cancellation of events and field trips planned to come, and share the anxiety felt about how to move forward.

On Monday, we will begin Distance Learning for All, which is a change from the past two weeks.

Under the guidance of the Oregon Department of Education, Lake Oswego School District has been making the shift from Supplemental Learning Opportunities to delivering Distance Learning for All, which will include new content. Our primary goal will continue to be connecting with students as individual learners and supporting a sense of community and continuity in their education.

Each week (April 13-June):

  • Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and STEM lessons will be posted on Mondays by our Counselor and Innovation Facilitator.

  • Teacher-Led Learning: Tuesday-Friday, Teachers will post lessons or activities daily for new grade level content/standards. Music & PE will be posted 2x/week for students.

  • Learning and Supplemental Activities: supplemental activities may be connected to Teacher-Led Learning, led by the student or family (examples: independent reading, writing, drawing, listening to read aloud, flashcards, measuring, creating, etc).

Students will have flexibility to engage in these activities and lessons when it is convenient for their family. Teachers and specialists will provide feedback and support so that our students progress in their education and are prepared for the next grade level. As you can see, we will need your support to make online learning a success. Expect this process to be fluid in nature. We will continually assess how we are doing and make adjustments as we go.

Special education services will also begin next week, and case managers will contact and work with families of students with individualized education plans (IEPs) to provide support as needed.

Additionally, it is our priority to continue to focus on student belonging, well-being, and mental and social-emotional health. School counselors are available to all students. Each Monday our counselor will post lessons and activities related to social and emotional support for students and parents.

I am guessing that you are a little nervous about this - and so are we! There may be hiccups along the way, but know that our staff is working diligently to bring you and your students the best online experience we can. We thank you for your patience, flexibility and grace as this digital learning model evolves.

LOSD Distance Learning for All

Distance Learning for All begins on Monday, April 13. Teachers and staff will be providing teaching and learning in accordance with guidance from the Oregon Department of Education. Please click on the button to review all details.

How to Get Ready for Video Meetings!

Starting next week, teachers may host scheduled group meetings to create connections and provide interactive teacher-led instruction. Parents must be notified in advance. Any meetings of 10 or more students will be recorded and made available so that students missing the session can watch it at a later time. Students will be given the opportunity to turn off their camera and/or microphone. Students that do not follow video conferencing etiquette or typical classroom behavior expectations may be excused from the meeting by the teacher.

Letter from Our School Counselor

Dear Westridge Elementary School Families and Students,

Hello! I hope you are doing well. I miss seeing students each day and have been thinking about you a lot in these past few weeks. This is a very challenging time, with many of our routines disrupted. My hope is that you are able to spend quality time with your family, taking care or your health, and looking forward to connecting and learning again.

I would like to take this opportunity to connect with you and let you know how I can support you and your students during this unique time. I am still here to support your student’s social/emotional needs, finding resources to support you and your family, and questions about Social-Emotional Learning lessons. I am more than happy to help address any questions that come up.

Communication at this time is more important, yet more challenging during this time of school closures. All communication has to be virtual and electronic to maintain social distancing. I can be contacted in the following ways:

Virtual office hours:

Mondays 1:00-3:00

Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays 10:00-11:00

Thursdays 11:00-12:00

During office hours, I will be available to respond to emails in real time, and can respond with Google Hangouts calls as requested.

I can be reached via email at kieserg@loswego.K12.or.us. Please feel free to email me to schedule a Google Hangout during office hours.

Thank you for your patience and perseverance during these times. Together, we can support all students at Westridge.

Sincerely,

Gary Kieser, MS, LPC

Westridge Elementary School Counselor
