*Important Schedule Change*
If you have a DB, main campus class, you will not need to report to that class. If you are a 9th or 10th grader who has a DB, main campus class, please reach out to that teacher regarding the virtual work that will need to be completed.
11th and 12th graders will report to school on Tuesday, 9/22.
- Students in the 11th grade will report to school on Tuesday and will be taking a practice ACT assessment for most of the morning. This practice assessment is very important. We are paying a third party to score the test and to create an individual ACT preparation plan for each student. Part of this plan includes access to a test prep portal that focuses on the individual areas of need for each student. This would cost parents hundreds of dollars if they pursued this individually. The school is going to cover the entire cost of the practice test, results and access to the portal/program for the remainder of their high school years.
- Students in the 12th grade will report to school on Tuesday and will be taking the actual ACT assessment. They will report to DB EXCEL no later than 7:45 am. Please do your best work. National test dates for the ACT have reopened, but we never know when access to testing could be postponed or cancelled again. Additionally, we still plan on honoring ACT incentives for scores and improvement throughout this year.
Buses will run on Tuesday for 11th and 12th graders. Students who are taking the practice test and the ACT (without extended time accommodations) will be dismissed from school around 12:30-1:00 p.m. Breakfast and lunch will still be provided. Lunch will be a packed lunch that can be picked up at breakfast in our Cafe.
We have some seniors who will be taking the ACT with extended time accommodations. Those students should be finished no later than 2 p.m. We will have a bus that will operate for those students as well (as needed). They may also grab a packed lunch at breakfast in the Cafe.

Tips for Being a Successful Virtual & Hybrid Student
Treat online course like a “real” course
When it comes to online courses you need to have the follow through and discipline to sit down and complete the work. Remind yourself that these courses will count for high school credit, attendance and toward your GPA.
Practice time management
Create a weekly schedule that you follow, designating certain hours each week to reading, watching lectures, completing assignments, studying, and participating in forums. Commit to making your online coursework part of your weekly routine, and set reminders for yourself to complete these tasks. Make sure to factor in prior commitments.
Try time blocking where you set aside certain times throughout the day to work on certain classes or assignments.
If you're a morning person, wake up early and block off the morning to get your work done. If you work best later is the day block off time after dinner to do you assignments.
Make a daily to- do lists and cross off assignments as you complete them. Refer to each teacher's weekly pacing guide to ensure you are staying on track.
Create a study space conducive to learning.
Have a regular spot where you go to work on school. This place should be where you are most productive.
Avoid beds and couches. Try working at desks or tables to be your most productive.
Try to find a spot that is out of communal areas where family and friends could easily distract.
Keep materials that pertain to your course work here. Paper, pencil, notes, handouts in an organized manner so that they are easy to retrieve.
Eliminate distractions
Keep TVs and music turned off in your study space
Put cell phones on silent
Actively participate and leverage your network
Make sure you are checking in as often as you can. Logging into classes daily to check on announcements, read feedback from teachers or comments left on discussion boards.
Make friends in the course and ask for contact information. Your peers can give your feedback assignments and answer questions. Form virtual study groups. Chances are they will thank you for the contact.
Email teachers clarifying questions about assignments. Ask for feedback. If you feel like you are falling behind, reach out to your teachers for advice.
Come to Google meets/ zoom sessions.

Canvas Parent Accounts
At D-B EXCEL, we strongly recommend parents to create a Canvas parent account so that they can observe their student's courses. Observers can link their Canvas account to their student's account so they can see assignment dues dates, announcements, and other course content. Observers can view the course content but cannot participate in the course. Please review the reference sheet below for the steps to create a Canvas Parent Account.

Dobyns-Bennett Pulaski Club
Attention 11th & 12th graders....
The main objective of the D-B Pulaski Club is to educate high school students in the science of wildland fire and its role in managing our natural resources. We accomplish this objective by:
- Pulaski Club meetings after school two Mondays per month in Mr. Kerns room (Math pod E109)
- Completing online National Wildfire Coordinating Group training courses S190 & S130 (see video on Pulaski Club website). These are professional certifications that are recognized nationally by every wildland fire agency.
- Conduct our very own, on-campus Fire Ecology Research Project at the D-B track. We do our own prescribed burns at the D-B track and study the effects of fire on the ecosystem.
- We have several local partners, both government and private, that invite us to participate in their prescribed fire events. These are usually a full-day field trip that students never forget!
- We have all our own PPE (personal protective equipment) to participate in any live fire event we are invited to or perform on our own.

Senior Pictures
Wednesday, September 23rd at DB.
This is your last chance to get senior pictures taken for this school year.
Students will be assigned a time slot to have their pictures made based on last name. Please see chart below for your designated time.
Important Notes:
LOCATION: DB Main Campus, Front Lobby, Left Side
For ease of wardrobe changes and optimal photos, Lifetouch asks girls to wear/bring a tank top and guys to wear/bring a white t-shirt. Lifetouch will do 2 poses (formal tux / drape and cap & gown). Lifetouch will provide the tux/drape and cap & gown. Students will not be doing additional casual poses during the make-up session.
There is NO sitting fee required for senior portraits. Proofs will be delivered via students’ home addresses / emails with instructions on how to purchase their portraits if they so choose. Regardless, each senior needs his/her portrait taken for the yearbook.
In order to maintain social distancing, minimize wait time, and allow the photographers to take quality photos, students need to come at their scheduled time if at all possible!
Any student who cannot make his/her scheduled time should go during the All Call / Last chance time between 3 and 6 p.m. at the end of the day.
If a student is unable to make his scheduled time or the all call time, he/she may come at another time during the day but may experience longer wait times.
There will be a lunch break for the photographers and staff from 12:00-1:15, so no photos will be taken at that time.
