Chimborazo Elementary Newsletter
April 2019
Principal's Message
Parents and Community Stakeholders,
March has flown by! It was a very festive month both in and out of school. Our PTA was able to raise over $1,500 dollars at the Church Hill Irish Festival to fund activities and projects around the school! Thank you to the families that stopped by the booth to contribute or that volunteered their time. This past month also included our 2nd Annual Chimborazo Idol, 1st grade Writer's Gallery, Literacy through Art Night, visitors from Philadelphia for a hip-hop math assembly, multiple Blue Sky field trips, Fruit and Vegetable Week, Read Across America Week, and the conclusion of our One Richmond One Book/Bike Giveaway! Thank you to everyone that contributed to the success of these events.
Academically, we are about to begin the last quarter of the school year. Report cards will be sent home the week we get back. Students should be exhibiting academic skills that indicate they are ready for the next grade level. Our students in grade 3 through 5 will continue to prepare for their state-wide tests that begin in May. Parents with students in 3rd grade, please be sure to mark your calendars and be at SOL night, April 11th, to discuss what the test will look like and leave with resources you can use at home to support your child’s success. All students should be working on the links sent on the grade-level newsletters for reading, math, science, and Virginia Studies to develop skills in those areas. Teachers are remediating in small groups, in all grade levels, for students who are not showing mastery on their unit assessments to ensure our students exhibit grade level skills.
Thank you for your cooperation and, as always, thank you for your valued support and contributions to making Chimborazo a world-class school! Have an amazing Spring Break!
Respectfully,
David T. Peck

Attendance matters
Research shows that missing 10 percent of the school, or about 18 days in most school districts, negatively affects a student’s academic performance. That’s just two days a month and that’s known as chronic absence.

The power of "YET"
Some of you may have read about growth versus fixed mindset. A fixed mindset asserts that we are born with a given set of abilities and aptitude and that these cannot change over time. We want our students to embrace a growth mindset. The video, through class dojo, illustrates this concept. When a concept is hard or we encounter a challenge, it is imperative to not give up and develop the skills and abilities to overcome these challenges. Parents and students alike, when we are faced with a challenge, tell yourself," I may not be able to do this YET." Using YET is a powerful way to illustrate, even though we may not be where we want to be at the current moment, we can get there with the right attitude and work ethic. Use the power of YET and embrace a growth mindset!
