The Golden Envelope Pledge Drive - Halfway there!

Hello Park Village Families,

We are half-way through our Annual Golden Envelope Pledge Drive and we are so thankful to the many families that have already made their donation!

Our goal this year is to raise $160,000!

Your donations truly make a difference for the students at our school.

Your donation goes directly toward paying our very own science teacher, Mrs. Nellies. Your donation helps fund her many grade-level appropriate science labs and all the supplies!

Through the Meet the Masters program, students will learn about different artists and art techniques. Your donation pays for our art teacher, Ms. Hirst, and all the art supplies needed to run the program.

In 2020, our beloved PE teacher, Coach Mills, retired. We are still in the process of hiring a PE teacher, but your donation will go directly to their salary and all the PE supplies that are stored on site for students to use during recess and teacher-led PE sessions.

Your donation allows us to have our very own music teacher, Ms. Ladow. Her music program is a student favorite! In previous years, your donations also paid for the ukeleles that students learn to play in their 5th grade school year.

Your donations help us pay for licenses of many of the online learning programs your students use on an almost daily basis. Last year, we were able to upgrade ALL the of the docu-cams in all of the classrooms.

There is so much more that your donation dollars help fund and we greatly appreciate all your help and support!

Your 100% tax-deductible donation of $350 per student goes directly back to the school, providing funding for Science, PE, Music, Art and Technology and so much more!

We encourage you all to donate online by visiting www.parkvillagefoundation.com/pledge-drive/

If you choose to pay by cash or check, you can drop your golden envelopes into the mailbox inside the front gates.

If you have any questions, contact us at parkvillagefoundation@gmail.com

Golden Envelope Pledge Drive - Corporate Match

You can easily double your donation by checking in with your employer to see if they participate in a corporate matching program.

We have received corporate match donations from many employers around San Diego.

If you work for the following businesses, please consider contacting your HR for more information on corporate matching:

  • Qualcomm
  • Intuit
  • Google
  • Illumina

That is just a partial list of the common businesses we've seen in the past.

To find out if your company participates, you can try searching here: https://ww2.matchinggifts.com/powayusd

If you have any questions, contact us at parkvillagefoundation@gmail.com

Please join us on Friday, September 10th at 6pm for the PTA Picnic on Park Village Elementary's field. Bring a blanket to sit on, your own food, and your family, to dine al fresco on the field while you get to know other families and the kids play. This event is open to ALL families affiliated with the school, no PTA membership required. We hope to see you there!

PTA Lego League

Thank you to all of the people who reached out about Lego League! With great sadness, we have determined we cannot hold the program this year. It is a school sponsored extracurricular activity, which under the current regulations and circumstances, we are unable to host. There is a lot of excitement around this program, so we hope to be able to start up the program next year!

In the meantime, if you have other ideas about programs that fit under current requirements or other ways to get involved, please join us at our upcoming General Association PTA Meeting on September 23rd, or reach out to us at PVPenguinsPTA@gmail.com. Thank you for your understanding and support as we continue to figure out how to navigate this environment!

Interested in Volunteering?

Hello Park Village Families!

If you are interested in being a part of our volunteer community please send me an email at sifferlens@gmail.com. This is simply an interest list to help out at special events Team PV (DADS, PTA, and Foundation) have throughout the year. The commitment is as much time as you’d like to give, for events that you’d like to assist. If you already put your name on the volunteer interest list sheet, you should have received 2 emails from me this week. If you did not receive those emails, please let me know (because I most likely typed in the wrong email address). If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me!

SAVE THE DATE: 2nd Annual Harvest Festival, October 30th

We are in the beginning stages of planning our 2nd Annual Harvest Festival. We will soon be looking for small businesses and home-based businesses from our Park Village families to participate. More information will be coming out next week, so stay tuned!

Life Skills Kids Need Before They Leave Home

You may have read stories about -

  • The good student who struggles in college – not with classes, but with living on their own

  • Highly intelligent adults who somehow don’t know how to budget and wind up deep in debt

Helping kids learn basic life skills (rather than doing everything for them) is important to their success in life.

  • Understanding Money

Teaching this life skill and can literally make or break their success as an adult. Understanding money includes how to manage it, delay gratification, the responsible ways to handle debt, and investing/saving for their future.

  • Learning How to Cook

Research shows that people who frequently cook meals at home eat healthier and consume fewer calories than those who cook less. In addition to this, home-cooked meals are often less expensive so they will also have the ability to keep their food budgets in check. I wish I had known, early on, to teach my sons how to cook. My youngest son only eats what can be zapped in the microwave.

  • Being a Self-Starter

Letting your kids experience some independence, and letting them figure out a few things on their own nurtures their independence. You can start by giving them responsibility for their homework. This is a great area to teach time-management as well. Managing one’s time is a skill kids need in order to successfully manage a busy college or work schedule. This skill will also help them assign priorities to a variety of projects.

  • How to Cope with Failure

As difficult as it is to see our kids make mistakes – failure is full of important lessons. Now, while the consequences are small, is a perfect time for them to learn to be okay with mistakes or the loss of a friend (relationship or something they set about to attain), pick themselves up, try again, rethink the situation and move on. The Gift of Failure by Jessica Lahey is a great read on this topic.

  • How to Take Care of a Home and Do Laundry

Having kids do and rotate doing different chores helps this. If you start young it will often seem like fun. When they get older it often helps them to understand that everyone in the household is responsible to help it to run smoothly (not just mom).

These ideas were taken from an article on Self-Sufficient Kids. They struck me as being very useful. I wanted to share the wealth!

Enjoy your parenting.
