Spring Cleaning
Spring is right around the corner which means some good ol' spring cleaning is in order. Time to clean off the old resume and begin polishing our marketing tools. Whether you are a student, new professional, or seasoned professional, this can be a time to clear out the clutter and work on our professional image.
Here are 3 steps you can take to clean it up fast:
- Clean up your resume- Writing a resume is hard work and no one enjoys the process or revising this important document, but like all chores, it needs to be done. Review the resources provided by the Career Center to make sure your formatting is clean and clear. Then work on your statements- Are you demonstrating the skills you need to show for the new position or just rehashing duties from a previous job? Are the the statements concise yet show results? Are all personal pronouns gone? Does each statement begin with an action verb? Now, bring your revised document by the Career Center during Drop-in hours (9-4) for a resume review or use our online review process.
- Polish your online image- Have you Googled yourself lately? If not, I encourage you to do so or better yet, set a Google alert for your name. If there are things on that first page of results you would not show your grandmother, find a way to change that. A great option is to create a online portfolio/ePortfolio. Read this blog to learn more. Once you have done this, you can add the link to your resume for employers to find easily. Since around 85% of employers report Googling applicants, give them a way to find the good stuff easily. Don't forget to create a free LinkedIn profile as well and upload your polished resume to begin networking online professionally. Remember, the Career Center is happy to look over your portfolio and give recommendations.
- Clarify your references- Whether you are applying to graduate/professional school or for a job, you will need 3-5 professional references ready to go. Do you know who you would ask? Now is a great time to clarify who would be a good reference and continue cultivating these relationships. Your references should be professionals or instructors and not family or friends. You will need to ask permission to use someone as a reference or to write a recommendation letter. Be sure to give them the info they need to serve as a good reference- a resume, description of the program/job, and possibly a transcript. Ask if they might be willing to endorse you on your LinkedIn profile while you are at it, and be sure to return the favor.
These small steps can make a big impact on your professional presence and you will thank yourself later.
The 3rd floor office of the Career Center will be under construction for the spring semester so please go the 4th floor of Martin Hall for assistance. We will continue to offer the full range of services in this location and hours of operation will remain 7:45 AM – 4:45 PM with Drop-Ins offered from 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM.
