Introducing....Laura Wilk: Section 504 Coordinator for TEA
Laura Wilk, M.A.Ed., is the Section 504 Coordinator for Texas Education Agency (TEA) in the Division of Special Education. As a former Special Education/Section 504 campus leader, she built a career history of success providing leadership, direction, guidance, and management to students, parents and campus staff to enhance the effectiveness of all programs and services for students with disabilities.
Her new role at the Texas Education Agency is to provide technical assistance and support in the areas of multi-tiered systems of supports and compliance with Section 504 and IDEA regulations to parents, district staff and regional service centers across Texas. Who Determines Eligibility?
Child Find-Stop, Look, and Listen!
•"No, he’s not eligible. He’s really smart.”
•“The only ‘educational impact’ is that he doesn’t try hard enough.”
•“You don’t understand. If we told staff they had to refer students like Joe, they would refer everyone.”
•“I’m going to lose my job if I don’t expel him.”
As I always say, "Go through the process."
Mental Health: The Focus is Shifting.
Academic success is no longer the only measure. A holistic approach involves looking at all facets of a student’s education-academic, social and emotional.
Students succeed when they are taught a number of mental health-related skills, including coping strategies, resilience, self-awareness, and self- regulation.
