LCE News from Mrs. Blaney

December, 2022

Dear Families,

The month of December was filled with 12 exciting school days! Students continued learning Math, Social Studies, Reading, Writing, Science, Physical Education, and the Arts. They also joined in on many other extracurricular activities thanks to our parents, community, and staff. This newsletter shares a little of what happened at LCE in December, provides reminders of the resources available to families, and previews upcoming events.

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday break and were able to enjoy it with family, fun, and food. I was able to spend time with some of my family in Wisconsin. The weather was cold, but the experience warmed my heart. I look forward to seeing our students back on Wednesday, January 4.

COVID Testing Prior to Return to School

Big picture
All students were given a COVID testing kit to take home. This kit contains two tests - one test must be administered on Tuesday, Jan. 3, prior to students' return to school. A special email will be sent that morning to remind families, and this email will also contain the attestation form that we ask all families to complete. LCE families did a GREAT job the last time attestation was required! There were very few families that we needed to contact since we heard from most of you. The second test in the kit is yours to use as you see fit.

LCE Workshops

Big picture
I'm pleased to announce our first Parent Workshop, led by LCE Sage Therapist Rachel Hirshberg. We heard from both staff and parents and will start offering regular offerings for parents. On January 11 at 9:30 a.m., parents are welcome to attend a workshop to discuss the importance of offering children choices while remembering that parents are in charge! We are calling this workshop "Peas or Carrots?" in honor of 2nd-grade teacher Karen Gilmour as it is one of her favorite parenting sayings. Join Rachel for this collaborative parenting discussion to share and gain tips.
Big picture
Another event that we are proud to provide this year is a Family Literacy Night for our TK and Kindergarten students and their families. This event (Jan. 24 at 6:00 pm) will be fun for all and will include stations, so families can stay for as much time as they wish. Join TK and Kindergarten teachers Ms. Lee, Mrs. Schiller, and Mrs. Dannemann, Kindergarten Enrichment teacher Mrs. Riegler, Responsive Teaching Teacher Ms. Ma, Occupational Therapists Tracy Prehn and Jessica Voelker, and LCE Librarian Billie Melillo and learn more about foundational skills for our youngest students.
Did you know that, as LCUSD parents, you have free access to Smart Social? This website offers over 400 resources, answers all your questions about apps, privacy, and online safeguards, and has monthly parent training opportunities! Josh Ochs has presented to our parents and students in the past, and he is coming to our district in January (see below). I hope you can take the time to log in to the membership portion of his website and start learning!
This is just a reminder that you should be receiving emails and alerts from ParentSquare. Many of LCE's teachers are also using ParentSquare to communicate with families, share photos, and set up appointments. Using the app is a handy way to keep all of the communication from LCUSD and LCE in one place.

Thank you in advance for your generosity. Don't see your teacher's name below? Reach out and ask them if they have one, or if they need anything for their classroom!
