The Quill 9-22-20
Creating Opportuntities Together
A Thought or Two From Mr. Nieslanik
It sure has been a whirlwind since the last edition of The Quill. School has started and I can already feel that we are settling into a pattern, a familiar cycle of learning and academic engagement. I do know that it sure does feel different, but as I pop into and out of classes I can see that our students are engaged, learning the ins and out of Comprehensive Distance Learning, and leaning into what is being asked of them. I also can feel your partnership as well. Thank you to each and every parent, grandparent, guardian, and family member who is pushing our students to engage and be the best they can be!
I thank you for your patience. Getting the 4x4 schedules into students' hands was quite the process, then the balancing and filling of holes took us longer than we thought, but I think we are within sight of the finish line in this work. Also, thank you for asking clarifying questions and pushing us to ensure we are as clear and concise as possible. Together, this is a partnership and we are so thankful you are in this community alongside us.
Until next time,
David

College and Career Center Corner
We have many, many college visits coming up in the next six weeks. This year, due to CDL, all BSD high schools are partnering together to share the work. Here is a link to all college visits currently scheduled. To help us navigate invites we ask students who are interested to fill out this form. Zoom invites will be sent to all interested students, grades 9-12.
College visits begin the week of 9/28 and in the first week we have over 20 colleges and universities visiting BSD with several highlights including: Whitman, Linfield, Gonzaga, Yale, Princeton, University of Montana and my Alma Matar--Colorado State University!
Upcoming College Visits 9/28-10/2
Maximizing the Use of the Chromebook and Zoom during CDL
The Beaverton School District and districts around the country are seeing student Chromebooks crashing or losing the Zoom connection when teachers share their screens or move into breakout rooms. We are in contact with Zoom engineering on this issue and their initial request is for students to do the following BEFORE joining a Zoom class:
- Start each day of classes by restarting your Chromebook
- Close any unneeded browser tabs prior to starting the Zoom meeting.
- Especially stop any other streaming services on the Chromebook such as Netflix, Spotify, etc.
The goal here is to reduce the network activity in the Chromebook and reduce the demand on the system in general. Please do not attempt to exchange your Chromebook for these issues. We will quickly communicate information/solutions as soon as we have them.
