Counselor's Corner
During our first lesson with Dr. Hickey we talked about the wide variety of feelings that we have. We identified feelings that are easy to have and feelings that are hard to have, and we talked about what physically happens in our body when we feel different ways. During our second lesson we focused on the parts of our brain (pre-frontal cortex, amygdala, and brain stem). We learned that when our upstairs and downstairs brains are communicating, we can think and learn, but sometimes our feelings (downstairs brain) take over and we "flip our lid." We have to calm down before our thinking brain (upstairs brain) can be in charge again. Ask your child to show you the hand brain model and the parts of the brain!
Right now we are learning about self-regulation by identifying when our "engine" is running too slow, too fast, or just right. We are discussing ways we can move from too slow or too fast to just right so that we can focus on what we are doing and be successful. Ask your child, "How is your engine running?"

Durante nuestra primera lección con la Dr. Hickey hablamos sobre la amplia variedad de sentimientos que tenemos. Identificamos sentimientos que son fáciles de tener y sentimientos que son difíciles de tener; hablamos tambien sobre lo que sucede físicamente en nuestro cuerpo cuando nos sentimos de diferentes maneras.
Durante nuestra segunda lección, nos enfocamos en las partes de nuestro cerebro (corteza prefrontal, amígdala y tallo cerebral). Aprendimos que cuando nuestros cerebros de arriba y de abajo se comunican, podemos pensar y aprender, pero a veces nuestros sentimientos (el cerebro de abajo) toman el control y "volteamos la tapa".
Tenemos que calmarnos antes de que nuestro cerebro pensante (el cerebro de arriba) pueda volver a estar a cargo.
¡Pídale a su hijo que le muestre el modelo de cerebro de la mano y las partes del cerebro!
En este momento estamos aprendiendo sobre la autorregulación al identificar cuando nuestro "motor" funciona bien, demasiado lento o demasiado rápido. Estamos discutiendo formas en las que podemos pasar de demasiado lento o demasiado rápido a lo correcto para poder concentrarnos en lo que estamos haciendo y tener éxito.
Pregúntele a su hijo, "¿Cómo está funcionando su motor?”
