YOUR PATH BEYOND HIGH SCHOOL
SENIORS: WHAT SHOULD I BE DOING NOW?
-Grades - Quarter 1 will end on November 9th. Please check your grades and take care of any improvements that are needed: complete missing assignments, talk to the teachers if you need help, put some extra time into studying for tests, do extra credit assignments if they are offered. Please make a last push to get your grades as high as possible before the end of the quarter.
-College Deadlines - If you are applying to 4-year colleges, mark your calendar with application due dates and mark a date at least two weeks before the first deadline for you to have your recommendation and transcript requests complete. University of Maryland College Park and UMBC have a November 1st early action deadline. Once all of your materials have been submitted, please check one more time that the college has received everything necessary.
-College – Types of applications - Be careful not to apply Early Decision (binding) unless you and your parents are absolutely sure you will attend that institution if accepted. Early Action and Priority deadlines are not binding and may increase your chances of being accepted. Please see your counselor to talk about the pros and cons.
-Testing – Colleges require that SAT (www.collegeboard.org) and ACT (www.act.org) scores be received directly from the testing organization. If you did not request scores to be sent when you took the tests, you must go back to the websites above and pay to have scores sent to each of the colleges to which you are applying. If you have ever created a College Board account, you MUST go back to the same account in order to request scores. If you are not sure whether you have an account, you will need to call the College Board at 866-756-7346.
-Financial Aid – Begin checking the scholarship page in Naviance and check there regularly for new additions to the scholarship list. Just as with college applications, if you need something from a counselor or teacher for a scholarship application, please make that request at least two weeks in advance of the deadline.
-Apply for FAFSA beginning October 1st. http://www.fafsa.gov Even if you or your family has saved up money for college, the FAFSA is required for different types of aid. You don't need to apply for admission to a school before adding it to your FAFSA form. List any school you're considering! You can also add or remove schools later.
JUNIORS: WHAT SHOULD I BE DOING NOW?

-College – online presence - You will be communicating with colleges and scholarship programs by email. Please consider the email address you are currently using. If it seems kind of silly or unprofessional, this would be a good time to create a professional email account that you can use for colleges and future employers. This is also a good time to consider whether everything you have posted in social media sites is appropriate. College admissions professionals and employers tell us that they absolutely look at what candidates have posted online. This is the time to remove any questionable pictures or comments in hope they will not negatively impact your future.
-Join a club or activity here at school. It's a great way to meet new people, try something new and boost your college resume. See below for a list.
