Lightning Highlights - Vol. 10

Week of 10/3/2022

Principal Post:

If you have not had an opportunity to find out more information about the propositions that will be on the November 8th ballot, I highly encourage you to find out more information concerning these two, very important, propositions. Listed below are some upcoming opportunities to get more info.

Let’s Learn with Bruce: Elections

In an effort to create educational awareness about the November ballot, Leander ISD is hosting a series of conversations. Superintendent Bruce Gearing, Ed.D., will lead a discussion about Propositions A & B over the next several weeks ahead of the November 8 election.

Due to sizable recent increases in property appraisals across our region, the district’s property values have reached a point that has triggered two elections: an Attendance Credit Election (ACE) and a Voter-Approval Tax Rate Election (VATRE).

We encourage the community at-large to learn more about these ballot issues during the following opportunities:

  • Wednesday, Oct. 5 – 12pm, virtual Zoom webinar (link coming soon

  • Wednesday, Oct. 19 – 6:30pm, Facebook LIVE

  • Friday, Oct. 21 – 12pm at LISD LEO Conference Center

  • Wednesday, Oct. 26 – 6:30pm, virtual Zoom webinar (link coming soon)

Please use this link Let’s Learn with Bruce: Elections to let us know you’re attending. While sign-up is not required, it helps us plan for how many participants to expect.

We have provided a number of Prop A & B resources as well as voting information.

Propositions A & B

You may have heard that there will be two prepositions on the November ballot that will greatly impact LISD. Here is some information that explains Props A & B. Please take a moment to read it and if you have any questions visit LeanderISD.org/elections for more information.

The ballot for this November’s federal, state, and local elections will include two propositions related to Leander ISD.

Proposition A is an Attendance Credit Election. Due to an increase in the level of property values per student in Leander ISD, the state is removing about $31.2 million from our district through the process known as recapture, or Robin Hood. If LISD voters approve Proposition A, the district will make its required recapture payment to the state. If Proposition A fails, the state will look for other ways to remove revenue from LISD. For example, the state could force some taxpayers in our district to start paying taxes to a different district instead of LISD.

Proposition B is a Voter-Approval Tax Rate Election. By approving Proposition B, voters would ratify the tax rate set by the LISD Board of Trustees — a rate that is 6.24 cents lower than last year’s rate. Due to rising property values, the average tax payment would be about $38 per month higher than the average payment last year under Proposition B. Passage of Proposition B would generate an additional $32 million for academics in LISD, including teacher pay and the continuity of programs.

For much more information about these propositions, please visit LeanderISD.org/elections. You can also sign up for informational text-message updates by texting @LISDMoney to 81010. You can also text-message your questions to 512-399-0068.

Parenting the Love and Logic Way

Our Student and Family Support Team is facilitating the Parenting the Love and Logic Way® course during the fall of 2022 and spring of 2023.

This six-week program is designed to help parents nurture responsible, respectful, fun-to-be-around children who will learn how to make their own choices, own their problems, think critically and logically for themselves, while parents let empathy and consequences do the teaching. The course is appropriate for parents with any aged child and any situation: home, school or even work. The series is open to any parent. Visit the Love and Logic site or attend a free introductory session for more information about their philosophy.

The cost is $35 per person or $55 per couple (if sharing materials). Scholarships are available. Learn more and register for Love & Logic here.

Forgotten Items

It is inevitable that, at some time, your student will forget something, a lunch, water bottle, etc. You can bring the item up to the school where we have drop off shelves in the vestibule. When you get here, you will find stickers that you can fill out with your student's name and teacher. We have two Mrs. Henry's so please add the grade level for those two teachers.

Deliveries are made to the classroom at 10:00, so please have the item here by that time.

CNS Reminder!!

CNS wants to remind families that we are charging for meals this year. If a students' lunch account is not funded or underfunded, and the student reaches a negative balance of $15, the district provides a low-cost meal to the student until funds are replenished. If this happens, our CNS staff has a conversation alerting students they have a low or negative balance and they send an email to families alerting them as well.
