Principal's Newsletter
From the Desk of Russ Booth
November 12th, 2023
This past week we held class meetings to start the second quarter. We met with students to remind them of some of the expectations set at the start of the year like all students wearing their ID, and we also took the opportunity to clearly define expectations centered around the language we have been hearing in the building and how we treat each other.
At the start of the year, I let all students know they need to respect all adults in the building, their peers, and the building. We are trying to create and maintain a positive community culture where every student feels respected, supported, valued, and cared for. At the meetings we continued to emphasize the difference between intent and impact and how the words we use can have a negative impact on those around us, even those we consider friends. We have found through talking with various students that it is often friends who make comments that are meant as a joke, but they have a significant impact on those around them.
We discussed these things with the students in order to remind them of the expectations of respecting their peers. We have great kids at Mansfield High School, and I am continually reminded by the guests who come into our school and interact with them. We will continue to work with our students to meet the expectations when it comes to their peers and maintain a respectful building where everyone can be successful. I encourage families to talk to their students about the class meetings and what our students took from them.

The Annual AFL-CIO Scholarship Program is in its 65th year. Through the
scholarship program, the Massachusetts AFL-CIO is honored to continue a long
tradition of helping students continue their education as they work toward creating
bright futures.
The Massachusetts AFL-CIO scholarship program awardees receive between $500
and $16,000 towards their education. Over 40 unions, central labor councils, area
businesses and charitable trusts from across Massachusetts participate in awarding
scholarships that total nearly half a million dollars. Unions in Massachusetts have
given close to $10 million in scholarships since 2000. About 1,500 students take the
exam annually to compete for a scholarship. Students with a union affiliation are
eligible for both the Massachusetts AFL-CIO awards and those awards listed under
their specific local union/central labor council. Massachusetts students who do not
have union affiliation are eligible for the Massachusetts AFL-CIO scholarships only.
