Message from the Principal
Dear Virginia Lake Families,
Happy Red Ribbon Week! This week we will be celebrating making healthy choices in our lives. Students will engage in activities in their classrooms to learn about making healthy choices. On Friday, October 28th, we encourage all of our students to wear red to celebrate.
Virginia Lake would like to invite you to a S.T.E.A.M ( Science, technology, engineering, art and math) Fair on Monday, November 7th at 6:00 at Winston Campus Elementary. In partnership with NIU, families are invited to participate in hands on learning experiences. Please see the flyer below for more information.
The book fair will be at Virginia Lake Wednesday, November 9th to Friday, November 15th. Please save the date for Wednesday, November 9th from 6:30-7:30 pm for a PTA Family Reading night. There will be more details on the event soon.
The cold winter months are quickly approaching. A friendly reminder to send your child to school with a coat, hats, gloves and items to keep them warm at recess. We go outside every day for 30 minutes. I have included the guidelines for recess in the cold winter months. Requests to keep students indoors can not be accommodated without a doctor’s note. Thank you in advance for your understanding.
If your child needs a winter coat, please email one of our social workers, Ms. Maria majewskm@ccsd15.net or Ms. Brito britom@ccsd15.net. We have brand new coats for students to keep them warm this winter. In the winter, we do require snow pants and boots for students to play in the snow in our field.
Let’s make it a great week!
Warmest Regards,
Patti Van Winkle, Principal
Choir for 5th and 6th Graders
Dear 5th-6th Grade Virginia Lake Families!
We are very excited to share that Virginia Lake Elementary School has started a choir program for 5th-6th Grade Students! VL Voices will meet on Mondays and Tuesdays at 12:20-12:50 (during your child’s recess) in Ms. Klipstein’s Music Room, and we will have an evening performance in December! The choir began meeting on Monday, October 17th, but we are still welcoming more students to join! If your child loves to sing and would like to join, please have them complete the following Google Form: https://forms.gle/Cc5LumFqMAx3sQLx9, and attend rehearsal on Monday, October 24th! If you have any questions or concerns, please email either Ms. Olivia Bogacz (bogaczo@ccsd15.net) or Ms. Katherine Klipstein (klipstek@ccsd15.net). We are excited to make music with the kiddos!
District 15 Cold Weather Guidelines
Cold weather: Indoor recess is determined based on the following guidelines:
If the temperature outside, together with the wind chill, is below 0°F, all students will remain inside for the entire lunch hour.
If the temperature outside, together with the wind chill, is between 0°-10°F, the preferred procedure is a rotation of 20 minutes for lunch, a 20-minute outdoor recess, and a 20-minute indoor recess. However, at the principal's discretion, students may be kept inside for the entire lunch hour.
If the temperature outside, together with the wind chill, is above 10°F, students will have regular outdoor recess.
