Principals Message:

Kia ora whaanau,

This week some of our Year 3 and 4 students competed in the Franklin Netball competition. They showed great perseverance in learning the skills and competing at the same time. They listened to advice and learnt from watching other teams play. Well done to all the students that participated.

In Year 10 science the students had an exciting lesson dissecting beef hearts as part of their learning around systems in the body. The students were keen to learn about the heart and the brain.

Next week is student conferences (9th and 11th) and a teacher only day (10th). Please make sure you sign up for conferences to see your child’s teachers. Remember zoom and alternative days are options if you are not available on the set days. Use the staff contact list on the website or app to contact teachers directly.

Lastly every term we now receive a report on attendance from the Ministry of Education ‘Every day matters program’. Our latest report shows that we have a high number of absences that have no explanation. Absences that have no explanation are changed to 'Truant' at the end of the week. Absences can be notified to the office through the school app, by emailing student services, or by phoning the school. The highest number of 'Truant' absences are currently in Years 12--13. Even though these students are almost adults we still need to know why they are not at school.

Ngaa mihi,

Rebecca Bills

Daffodil Day:

This year Daffodil Day, one of The Cancer Society’s main fundraisers is being held on Friday 27th August. We have once again registered our school to take part in this fundraising event. Friday the 27th will be a non-uniform day, and students and staff are encouraged donate a gold coin to the cause, and to come to school dressed in bright colours – particularly daffodil colours. There will also be other opportunities to participate in daffodil day with writing and colouring, and other activities. More information about these will be given in next week’s newsletter.

Daffodil Day symbolises hope for all New Zealanders impacted by cancer. Sadly, every day 71 New Zealanders receive a cancer diagnosis. As a school we can help families in our community affected by cancer by participating in Daffodil Day. $24 helps to provide transport to and from cancer treatment. $58 helps to fund counselling for cancer patients and their whaanau. $107 helps to provide accommodation for those travelling to treatment, and $150 contributes to research that improves prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Last year we raised over$600.00. Let’s join together and see what we can achieve this year.

At the moment, the number of students they can accommodate is only just under 40.

Muster sheets are up in the gym. Students need to write their name for the sports they wish to represent our school in.

As we will have more students interested then there are places, priority will be given to students who are capable players in at least 2, 3 or 4 sports, who currently play sport for our school, who display our school values in their every day school life, and who will overall be great ambassadors for our school.

For some teams, trials may be held.

Communications with the students is through Kamar Notices, which are read out at 8.50am every day.

As a consequence of this review, ward and community boards boundaries are likely to change. We NEED to hear whether you agree or disagree with this. If you disagree, we want to hear what you WOULD like to see. We are now taking submissions - you have until Friday 20th August 5pm to enter a submission. Council facilitated community drop-in sessions have been planned for Tuesday 3rd August, Pukekawa Hall 6pm and Tuesday 10th August 5.30pm Tuakau Town Hall.
