WOOD WEEKLY
December 9, 2020
Good Afternoon Plainville Families,
I hope everyone is staying healthy and taking all of the changes in stride. We are continuing to do our part in keeping our rooms clean, washing our hands, social distancing and wearing masks. A big thank you goes out to all the families who are also taking precautions and allowing children to learn from home when there is uncertainty. The staff here is making every accommodation possible to ensure that students are able to learn from home and providing access and materials needed to do so. It is a transition, but we are all in this together.
After last week’s newsletter asking for ideas that families can become involved, I was approached with the idea of a mystery reader. Family and community members can zoom with a class as a mystery guest to read a short story, excerpt from a text, poem or whatever the teacher has prepared. Mystery guests can stay ‘in the dark’ with camera off, creating a suspenseful atmosphere. Guests can determine if they would like to offer clues or just have a reveal at the end. This may be a fun way for you to participate with your child’s class and become involved in a lesson or two. Please contact your child’s teacher if you are interested. (Teacher’s may be reaching out to you too!)
Health and Wellness
Massachusetts Departments of Public Health has required a flu vaccination for all in-person and remote students Kindergarten- Grade 12 by December 31, 2020. Please send in documentation of your child’s vaccination to Mrs. Pasquantonio. Thank you.
Report Card
Time is running out! The first trimester ends on Friday, December 11th. All student work must be submitted on or before the 11th. Report cards will be available in the parent portal on Monday, December 21st.
Lunch and Recess
Just a reminder that we will be attempting to head outside as much as possible for recess and lunch, weather permitting. Please be certain to dress for the weather, layering if possible. Gloves, mittens and hats will be helpful. As we keep windows open for air circulation, we understand that seating near windows can get chilly. Please feel free to bring in a personal blanket to sit on or for your legs. Blankets cannot be shared and can be kept in lockers overnight.

Survival Tips for Remote Learning
Here are our next survival tips. Hopefully they are helpful!
Survival tip #5: Provide an environment conducive to learning.
This can be challenging, especially when multiple members of the family are working remotely from home. If students are too isolated, it can be difficult to check in with them and if students are working in a central location they may be distracted. Choose a location in your home that is “public” enough to easily check in on your student, but private enough to minimize distractions. Remove other potential distractions like smart phones, tablets and other children from your student’s working environment. Make sure that your student can sit high enough in their chair to center themselves in their Zoom frame to encourage active participation in class meetings.
Survival tip #6: Review remote learning expectations.
It is important to be clear about remote learning expectations and to review them with your student periodically. In addition to discussing the online learning expectations of the school district and teachers, it may be helpful to set some expectations of your own. For example, it may be beneficial to predetermine when you are available to offer your student assistance when needed. You may also find it helpful to create a list of activities that students can enjoy during their break time.
