Principal's Message
This weekend I resurrected a love from my past . . . riding a mountain bike on a wooded trail. It was something I used to do with my sons when they were young, but haven't done in years. Like anything that you haven't done in awhile or something you're trying to do for the first time, my muscles reminded me they hadn't been used in precisely that way for awhile. We biked in a hilly area, so I tried hard to build momentum on the downhill portions to help carry me forward through the inclines - 11% grade in some places! Despite the soaking rain and struggling to keep up at times, I felt reconnected and took a bit of pride in taking a risk in front of others who are much more athletic and accomplished riders than me. I also set some goals to work towards in the next few months - some on my own and some with help from others.
Students, parents, and teachers have all been extending themselves in new ways during this closure period. Hopefully the sensation of discomfort as we stretch our knowledge and skills in new ways is giving way to feelings of connection and growth as learners. Instead of slowing their pace, now is the time for students to build momentum that will carry them into the fall. I encourage families to talk with their children about how they've grown as learners. A good starting place is to ask what have they learned about themselves as learners, what support they need, and what goals they have for themselves in the final month of the school year.
As always, I wish you and your families health and balance in these challenging times.
Warmly,
Jill O'Neill, Principal
Remote Learning Phase 3 Schedule Revisions: Furlough Day Plan
To mitigate some of the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the District will be participating in Oregon’s Work Share program. This participation will result in weekly furlough days of staff each Friday through the end of the school year. To account for these furlough Fridays, the following adjustments to the student, teacher, and service provider weekly work schedule are necessary.
The majority of teacher and service provider input and learning activities for students will continue to be asynchronous. Asynchronous learning allows for the greatest flexibility to address the needs of staff and students. Any synchronous learning will be within the schedule below to limit scheduling conflicts for students. Teachers and service providers will not be available virtually, by phone or via email on Fridays for student or parent consultation, to deliver instruction or to provide feedback on student work.
BSD Student Advisory Council
The Beaverton School Board believes that student perspectives provide important information as they lead and make decisions for the Beaverton School District. The Beaverton Student Advisory Committee (BSAC) will serve as one connection for students to be informed and have their voices heard within our District. ISB is represented by 1-2 juniors or seniors every year on the BSAC. We are now accepting applications from current 10th & 11th graders through Monday, May 25th. Ms. O'Neill and Mr. Gladney will have conversations will all applicants via Zoom the following week. For more information about responsibilities, time commitment, and to apply visit the BSAC webpage.

Culture Shock 2020
Several months ago, Oregon Episcopal School reached out to invite ISB to participate in their annual Culture Shock conference. With the Stay Home, Save Lives restrictions, their plans necessarily had to shift away from a conference. OES students and staff asked themselves how might we repurpose the keynote that Aisha Fukushima was going to give at Culture Shock? The result is this collaborative piece created by the students and Aisha -- Culture Shock 2020: A Virtual Adaptation. Culture Shock 2020: A Virtual Adaptation is a call to action that comes at a time when we may need to be inspired, challenged, and activated. OES has invited us to share it with the ISB community through May 18, 2020.
