News from Ms. Hess
In literacy, we read articles about hoverboards, bears in Yosemite and an article of our own choice. Readers determined importance, and identified important information in their articles. Ask your child what they chose to read. The articles were found on a wonderful resource called newsela.com. It is a site that culls articles from reputable sources, organizes them according to topic, and allows kids to set the reading (Lexile) difficulty level to their just right level.
Writers wrote silly paragraphs about things that smell bad (Hilarious!) and published a piece of poetry revealing their point of view about the world. Look forward to reading some delightful work while waiting for PLPs!
We continued our work in science exploring model making to help us understand things we cannot see and touch. Ask your child about "the drought stopper," an investigation regarding a siphon.
Mentors had their first opportunity to meet with our first grade buddies to share our love of reading. We chose picture books to read aloud to a small group of first graders.
I so look forward to meeting with families this coming week to share in your child's growth and development and to set goals for the year!
