Chapter 8: Implementing Rules and Procedures
Element 37: Acknowledging Lack of Adherence to Rules and Procedures
Just as the teacher should acknowledge students' decisions to adhere to rules and procedures, so should he or she acknowledge in some way students' decisions not to adhere to rules and procedures. However, such acknowledgement should not come in the form of punishment. Some of the strategies in table 8.5 are basically reminders to students. For example, verbal and nonverbal cues let students know when they are about to misbehave. Some of the strategies involve consequences for inappropriate behaviors. Some of the strategies involve support and positive pressure from other students. When the strategies in this element produce the desired effects, teachers will observe the following behaviors in students.
- Students cease inappropriate behavior following the teacher cues.
- Students accept consequences for their behavior as a natural part of the way the class is conducted.
- Students describe the teacher as fair relative to the consequences for not following rules and procedures.
