The SBAC Will Start Soon for 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade Students
The Smarter Balanced assessments are aligned with state and local standards in mathematics, reading, and writing. These online assessments allow for a variety of question types that ask students to demonstrate critical thinking, writing, research, and problem-solving skills. In addition, the test adjusts the level of test item difficulty in response to the performance of the learner. This allows for more challenging questions for students who are successfully completing items and an easing down of the level of challenge for students who are struggling. Results will be shared with parents as soon as they are received from the State.
Much information about the SBAC assessments can be found on our website at www.region15.org/sba or on the Connecticut State Department of Education Comprehensive Assessment Portal at http://ct.portal.airast.org/ including a training test to familiarize students with the computer features used in the test, and a practice test for each grade level. These are being used by our teachers to familiarize students with the format of the test.
In addition, assessment is required in Science once at each school level. This year for Science, students in grade 5 will participate in the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) test. Our school plans to administer the Smarter Balanced Assessment on the following schedule:
Fifth Grade
April 9th – NGSS
April 23rd, 24th &-25th ELA
May 14th, 15th & 16th Math
Fourth Grade
April 30th, May 1st & 2nd
May 21st, 22nd & 23rd
Third Grade
May 7th, 8th & 9th
May 28th, 29th & 30th
Please note: These testing windows are very flexible. Students will not be testing every day of the window assigned to their grade level. Make-up testing for ALL students will continue until June 7, 2019.
It is important to remember that Smarter Balanced assesses learning and skills that develop over a long period of time; therefore, “studying” for the test is neither desirable nor helpful. Your child's best preparation for state testing is getting a good night’s sleep, having a good breakfast, and arriving at school on time, relaxed, and ready to work.
