Principal's Message
Dear Bulldog Families,
As you know, there was a threat of severe weather yesterday, and a tornado warning was issued for Hamilton County. Due to this situation, our afternoon dismissal was delayed, and students moved to our safe locations in the hallways. As I mentioned to them yesterday and again today, we count on them to be an important part of our safety team; they did a great job moving quickly and following our tornado safety procedures. We appreciate the extra patience and flexibility you showed with our delayed dismissal yesterday as we were unable to release our students until we were given an all clear. You should have received email messages via Skylert, both from Hamilton Southeastern Schools and from NBE. If you did not receive this information, please call our office at 594-4130.
The tornado warning spurred a continued safety conversation at my house with my 12-year old daughter. I encourage you to talk to your student about severe weather safety and the plan that should be followed if severe weather occurred while he/she was at home. As always, thank you for partnering with us in education. Have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Lori Mankin

Head Lice Information
From time to time there may be cases of head lice (pediculosis) in the school. This is nothing to panic about. Head lice are a nuisance but not a health hazard. They do not spread disease.
What are head lice?
· Tiny wingless insects that are the size of a sesame seed (1/8 of an inch in size).
· Head lice have six legs for holding onto hair and moving quickly. They do not jump or fly.
What are nits?
· The eggs of head lice.
· Nits are shaped like a tear drop and are located close to the scalp, especially at the nape of the neck, crown of the head and behind the ears.
· They are firmly attached to the hair shaft.
How are head lice spread?
· Directly through head-to-head contact, or indirectly (less frequently) through sharing clothing, combs, hats, scarves, bed linens, towels and earphones, etc.
· Young children frequently get head lice because they have more head-to-head contact.
· Having head lice has nothing to do with being dirty or having bad hygiene. Head lice have been around for thousands of years and prefer living on clean hair.
How do I know if my child has head lice?
· If you see your child itching or scratching his head, or notice scratch marks or a rash on his neck, crown of head or behind the ears, inspect the head for head lice.
· Not everyone who has head lice will have symptoms of itching or scratching, which is why it’s very important to check your child’s head routinely.
· To inspect your child’s head:
o Ask him to sit in a place with bright light (sunshine is best).
o Look closely through their hair, especially behind their ears, at the nape of their neck and the top of their head.
Young Author's Night
Magazine Subscription Drive
Hey, New Britton Families! We are fast approaching the end of the year and it’s time to begin thinking about summer reading and continuing to keep reading skills strong. Along with joining the Summer Reading Program at the Fishers Library, another way to encourage students to read is with magazines! Providing high-interest, concise articles, like those in magazines, can also boost reading skills. There are several choices of publications; take a look at this website: www.gaschoolstore.com to see what’s available. There are many titles that your children, you, or other members of your family may enjoy. The school order code will be 4537858, if you wish to purchase something.
With that being said, beginning April 22nd , students will be bringing home a booklet containing 8 postcards. An example of how to fill them out will be provided on the second page of the booklet. If you could, please fill out the booklet with different, complete names and addresses of adult relatives and close family friends who you feel might be interested in purchasing a magazine, then return the booklet to school the next school day. Each student who participates will receive a Garfield Keychain, and the classroom with the most booklets returned will win a special prize. New Britton’s Library will be given a portion of the profit to purchase books! All booklets are due by May 5th.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Crane, Library/Media Specialist
