How you can support you child at home
Reading at home
Students grow enormously during their second-grade year! One of the best things you can do at home, is have your child read to you. It is recommended to have your child read nightly for at least 15-20 minutes. This will help tremendously with their progress in reading as well as strengthen their skills of comprehension, fluency and accuracy. Asking your child meaningful questions during and after their reading will help build these skills too. Remember that we want to create a "love for reading." Students will have the opportunity to bring home books from school that will strengthen and encourage their love for reading. We encourage you to read any books your family has at home, in addition to those brought home from school. Below are a few examples to help support you as you support your child at home with their reading.
Nightly Reading Log
This year, we are sending home a nightly reading log to be completed as homework. This can be found in your child’s take home folder. 2nd grade is asking each child to read 15-20 minutes nightly with someone. This can be mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, aunt, uncle, brother, sister, etc. (If you are in need of reading materials or books, please reach out to your child’s teacher.) Then, your child will answer 2-3 of the listed discussion questions verbally. Please initial next to the discussion questions for each day’s reading log (where it says “parent signature”). Your child’s reading log will be checked daily by their teacher.

Logging In At Home to Lexia, IXL, and ST Math
Each week, your child works on various computer programs (IXL, ST Math, Lexia) to improve their reading and math skills. These are targeted, individualized programs on their Chromebook that students work on to meet their individual skill goals.
The great news is that these programs are accessible from home!
To access:
1. Go to https://clever.com/ and click on "Log in as a Student"
2. If prompted to search for your school, type in "Norwood Elementary School." Select our school from the drop down.
There are several options for Norwood Elementary. Please click on the Burleson ISD, TX one.
3. Click the option that says "Log in with Google"
4. When prompted to sign in with your child's email, please type in their username@bisdmail.net. If you need your child's username, please reach out to their teacher.
Their username is TYPICALLY the first 5 digits of their last name, the first 3 digits of their first name, then 000. Ex: Johnny Appleseed's username would be applejoh000 and his email would be applejoh000@bisdmail.net
5. Type in your child's password. If you need your child's password, please reach out to their teacher.
Use the password they use to log into their Chromebook daily.
6. You have now reached the clever home page! Your child can click on the ST Math, Lexia, or Lexia icon (they know these from school) and begin working.
