Heritage Week a Huge Success!
What a phenomenal week at the Nest. We had some great presentations throughout the week and our guests were most complimentary of our students. The students asked thoughtful, reflective questions and were very welcoming of our guests.
Friday's assemblies with Mike Smith were undoubtedly the best we've had yet. Masses of students flocked around Mike at the end of each assembly. Mike was also very impressed by the students of LHS. We hope you are able to keep this idea of legacy and being a part of something bigger than yourself continuing throughout the year.
An undertaking as big as Heritage Week could not be accomplished without the work of many people. Kudos and thanks to the Heritage Week committee--Katie Bennett, Kelli Bradshaw, Melissa Calaman, Kasi Daniel, Cindy Enroughty, Tanya Espinoza, Woody Gehlert, Danielle Gish, Kay Gramling, Kathy Holbert, Shaylee Laton, Connie Martinez, Susan Muehlig, Melissa Porter, Kelly Singer, and Dave Siock.
The video below is a condensed version of Mike's presentation that you can share with your students.
Heritage Week Service Project
For our Heritage Week service project this year we will be collecting hats, scarves, gloves, socks, and toiletries for distribution in our local community. Items will be donated through 1A classes from November 5 through November 30. The class with the most donations will win breakfast on 12/4!
I Make a Difference
From Angela Henry
I would like to pass the "I Make a Difference" award to Terri Gayer. She is such a dedicated and hard-working colleague and teacher. Terri dedicates, literally, countless hours after school to provide her students with the experiences that they deserve, as learners and performers. She coordinates students through a myriad of different activities (including varying places and equipment) simultaneously including those performing on stage, running props and scenery, lighting, sound, etc. Without Terri and her knowledge of the many corners of the auditorium we would all be lost when it comes to running sound, using mics... even turning on the lights. And, she’s always happy to help. She has endless empathy for her students and gets to know each one well--their strengths and weaknesses, their needs both academic and emotional. I have never heard Terri say a single negative thing about anyone. And, she does everything with a big smile. She makes a difference at LHS everyday. We are lucky to have a colleague who is such a pleasure to work with, and a shining light for so many students.

We would like a wide variety of delegates to maximize the impact this program has on our school. We are also seeking chaperones. We need at least 10 staff members who are willing to stay overnight. Comp time will be awarded. Please use the form below to submit student names and indicate your interest in chaperoning. The form may be filled out multiple times.

Calendar Shift
Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) will use February 18 (Presidents’ Day) to make up instructional time lost during Hurricane Michael. Given the length of time out of school thus far, the division will also extend the first semester from Monday, January 28 to Thursday, January 31. Consequently, the division’s previously scheduled staff day/virtual learning day will now be Friday, February 1 and the second semester will begin Monday, February 4.
Report cards for the second nine weeks/first semester will be sent home Monday, February 11.
The 2018-2019 school calendar has been updated to include the makeup day and semester changes. The updated calendar is available on www.vbschools.com. Updated 2018-19 Calendar
