Would you be willing to help the Florence victims?
With Hurricane Florence devastating many areas in the North Carolina region, we have an opportunity to help those who were affected. Former Franklin teacher, Jen Marquis, and her husband Bryce live in New Burn, North Carolina. Bryce is currently a principal in a nearby rural community that experienced great flooding and many students lost clothing and school supplies.
Please consider the opportunity to assist these students by donating clothing items for boys and girls in grades kindergarten through sixth grade. Items should be either new or in like new condition, cleaned, free of stains, and free or tears. Mr. Marquis stated that the kids are primarily in need of pants and shorts as well as shirts. Monetary donations to assist with shipping the items are also being accepted.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Mr. Nagel at mnagel1@isd77.org. Your child can bring the donations to Franklin Elementary and give them to their teacher. Items will be collected and mailed by Friday, October 12.
Want to give a shout out?
We are inviting families to email Mr. Olson when their child(ren) have a successful experience outside of school. The celebration will then be included in the morning school wide announcement. Ideas of things that families might want announced: winning a soccer tournament, moving up to a new tae kwon do belt, participating in the regional science fair, etc. If you have something that you'd like us to recognize your child(ren) for, email tolson1@isd77.k12.mn.us.
Please include:

Franklin Festival
Franklin Festival is a week away and you don’t want to miss this fun event. Plan to attend this fun Franklin tradition on Friday, Oct. 12 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. It’s a chance to play games, eat food, see friends and teachers and explore Franklin Elementary! Youth (ages 3 and up) can enjoy unlimited game play with prizes (as prizes last) by purchasing $5 wristbands. Food and drinks will be available to purchase from Grandpa’s Concessions. Event held rain or shine.
Volunteers desperately needed to staff games and activities. We are looking for volunteers (adults and students in fifth grade or higher) to help with one 30-minute shift. Thanks so much for your support!

Is your child in need of a dental screening?
If you choose to participate, Open Door Health Center’s dental team will screen your child’s teeth to check for possible dental problems and apply a fluoride varnish. Your child will receive a toothbrush and teeth cleaning instructions. If your child is age 6 to 9 years old and it is determined during the screening process that your child needs sealants, we will be able to provide those services during this time. You will receive a report on the care provided and be notified if follow-up is recommended. The fluoride varnish and sealants, along with brushing and flossing, will help prevent cavities. This screening does not take the place of regular dental checkups by a dentist.
To allow your children to receive these services at their school, a parent or guardian must fill out the consent form by clicking this link to sign up and also complete the screening questions. Please call our School Dental Outreach Department at Open Door Heath Center at 507.388.2120 ext. 5654 if you have any questions or email schooloutreach@odhc.org.

What happened at last week’s Walk-A-Thon?
Franklin PTO held our second annual Walk-A-Thon last Thursday with much success. The students, staff, and parents in attendance had a blast walking to raise $11,133.76 for the school. Mankato Public Safety firefighters started the event off with the fire truck horn. Minnesota State University’s Stomper, the Mankato MoonDogs’ Muttnik, and Franklin’s own Freddie cheered on students as did parents sporting pom poms, cow bells, and race signs. Local media attended and Franklin even made the KEYC news on Thursday night and the Mankato Free Press on Friday morning. Thank you to everyone who donated to Franklin and to all the volunteers, students, and staff who made Walk-A-Thon such a successful and fun event.
Since we reached our $11,000 goal, PTO has the money necessary to fund educational enrichment experiences like author visits, theatre performances, and field trips, as well as classroom supplies and equipment, events for Franklin families, and staff appreciation celebrations. As prizes for exceeding the fundraising goal, students (and teachers) sprayed Mr. Olson with silly string after the Walk-A-Thon. Additionally, PTO will cover ALL costs with the roller skating curriculum in Physical Education and every Franklin student receives a Scholastic Book to take home next week.
What is Franklin Friday and how do I get Franklin Wear?
Franklin Friday was implemented last year as a community-building activity. We are proud to say that it is continuing this school year! Students and staff are encouraged, certainly not required, to wear Falcon Wear or school colors (blue or yellow) on Fridays. It's an easy and fun activity for the students to participate in and show their school spirit! Order forms for Falcon Wear are available in the PTO Facebook group, by email (contact Hilarie Tolifson at htolifson@yahoo.com) or in the office. Falcon Wear will also be available for purchase at events throughout the year starting at Franklin Festival next Friday, October 12.
How can I turn trash into cash for Franklin?
Franklin has what can be considered "Trash into Cash" programs, where we ask families to collect items that some might call trash and we submit them for money. At Franklin we collect Box Tops for Education, Milk Moola (Kwik Trip) lids/bags, and receipts from Mankato's two Hy-Vee stores. If you shop at or purchase any of these products, please consider saving them and submitting them to Franklin. We never expect families to change their buying habits, merely submit these items if they do purchase them. More information on Box Tops for Education and the Fall Box Tops Classroom Competition goes home in the next few days.
Have you returned your PTO Volunteer Form?
If you haven’t returned the PTO volunteer form distributed at entrance conferences, it’s not too late. Please turn it into the school office or your child’s classroom teacher. If you misplaced your volunteer form, please e-mail Tracy Ball at tracywaxball@gmail.com notifying her that you’d like to volunteer and she’ll add you to the list. Donating even an hour of your time this year really makes a big difference to your child’s educational experience.
Have a 3rd, 4th or 5th grader who loves science or nature?
It’s not too late to sign interested students up to attend the Science and Nature Conference and limited scholarship funds are available to help cover the conference registration costs (contact classroom teacher). Over 60 Franklin students will be riding a bus to the Science and Nature Conference held during the school day on Tuesday, October 23, 2018 at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter. This conference gives students hands-on sessions to delve deeper into science topics that interest them with sessions facilitated by science educators and museum staff from across Minnesota. It is coordinated by South Central Service Cooperative. This conference is completely optional for students in grades 3, 4, or 5. Franklin students will have a reduced registration fee, because we are coordinating a bus. For more information on the conference visit https://mnscsc.org/student/science-nature. See picture below for Franklin details.
