UNEASY PIECES: CENSORSHIP & CONTROVERSY IN MODERN ART
Art History 2990.01
Days/Times: Wednesday, 3:00pm to 5:30pm
Professor: Gerald Silk
CRN: 33622
NOTE: If you are interested in this course, please register IMMEDIATELY.
About: We live in controversial times and this course takes a look at works of art that have proved so provocative that attempts have been made to censor them. Invariably there are current events generating controversy, such as the recent debates about confederate monuments, cultural appropriation, and problematic treatment of animals in art. We look first at these more recent case studies first, and then move in reverse chronological order, viewing several films along the way relating to contentious subjects,. The class culminates in a trip to the Philadelphia Museum of Art to discuss Marcel Duchamp’s contentious 1917 work titled Fountain.
In our focus on censorship and controversy, we examine censorship theory and what makes artists/pieces problematic in an effort to determine if there are objective standards or whether context makes each situation relative. We investigate concepts such as censorship, iconoclasm, hate speech, freedom of expression, “publicness,” obscenity, and pornography and address issues of religion, ethnicity, race, sexuality, nationalism, identity, consent, patriotism, politics, animal rights, violence, terrorism, vandalism, morality, ethics, copyright, appropriation, and chronicling and intervention. While we Page37 concentrate on the visual arts, we also consider film, literature, music, theater, and other forms of expression. The class combines lecture, discussion, readings, presentations, and papers. This class can generate passionate and dynamic discussion as we work together in probing the balance between offensive expression and freedom of speech. This past year several student projects resulted in presentations at the TURF-CreWS undergraduate symposium.
VISUALIZING URGENCY
Days/Times: Wednesday, 5:30pm to 8pm
Professor: Robert Blackson & Sarah Biemiller
CRN: 28493
Do you ever feel powerless to make a difference in this world? That despite all of your best efforts and intentions the currencies of fear, division, and inequality are so ubiquitous and powerful that enfolded within them is a sense of irreparable and systematic monumentality?
Wherever change seems impossible; wherever numbness, stress, and inaction pervade – these are the places we need creative solutions the most. From the opioid crisis in Philadelphia to the staggering perpetuation of racial injustices, Visualizing Urgency examines the ways in which we have become habitually numbed to the world around us and how to unlock our individual potentials for becoming advocates of change in response to the issues we care most deeply about.
Visualizing Urgency is co-taught by Robert Blackson (Director of Temple Contmeporary) and Sarah Biemiller (Associate Director of Temple Contemporary). Together Blackson and Biemiller have undertaken a number of projects addressing issues of contemporary social relevance within Philadelphia. Most recently their citywide collaboration entitled Symphony for a Broken Orchestra has helped to fix over 1,000 broken musical instruments owned by The School District of Philadelphia and return them to the place they belong – kids’ hands!
