Who's To Blame?

By: Blake Vlasak

Introduction

In Romeo and Juliet Friar Laurence is to blame for both the deaths of Romeo and Juliet; However, many people believe he is not. The first explanation of why friar Laurence caused the death of Romeo and Juliet because he married them to bring the feud of the families to a end. In the scene Act II Scene V Romeo and Juliet are married by Friar Laurence without the households knowing because the friar wants the feud between the families to stop. Which then later involves the death of many family members for both houses. Then, later both Romeo and Juliet: ¨Come, Come with me and we will make short work; for by your leaves, you shall not stay alone Till holy church incorporate two in one¨(Shakespeare Act:II Scene: V). Next, the 2nd Explanation of why he's to blame is for the plan he came up with how Juliet will “die” by drinking a potion then sending a letter to Mantua for Romeo explaining the situation. The significance of this scene shows that Friar should of came up with a better plan and a better/faster way of communication to romeo: ¨Take thou this vial, being then in bed, And this distilled liquor drink thou off…No warmth, no breath, shall testify thou livest….Shall Romeo by my letters know our drift...¨(Shakespeare Act: IV Scene: I). For Romeo did not know of this plan and killed himself to be with Juliet.

West Side Story

Movie

In this Musical it is about two gangs the jets and the sharks. In this they are battling for position like the Montague's and Capulet's in Romeo and Juliet. Tony loves the sister of the gang leader Bernardo of the sharks (Maria). During this the two gangs have a "rumble" and Bernardo picks on Tony. Riff the other gang member punches Bernardo. Later, Bernardo kills Riff and Tony seeing this kills Bernardo like how Romeo killed Tybalt. Next, Tony tells Maria about the situation and maria pleads tony to stay with her. Maria in this position is like Friar Laurence coming up with a plan to escape. Then, Maria sends Anita to tell Tony the message but is stopped by the jets and Doc tells the wrong message to Tony that Maria was shot and killed by Chino. Tony runs through the streets shouting for Chino later is shot and killed.

Character Analysis

In Romeo and Juliet Friar Laurence is to blame for their deaths. Why Friar Laurence is to blame is because Friar wanted the households (Montague's and Capulet's) to stop fighting and he thought if he married Romeo and Juliet this feud would stop: "...Thy love did read by rote and could not spell. But come, young weaver, come, go with me, In one respect I'll thy assistant be...To turn your households' rancour to pure love" (Shakespeare Act:II Scene:III). My opinion about this action was Friar's heart was in the right place but his head was not. I know Friar did not like the fighting but it wasn't probably smart thing to marry a couple that met hours ago in the play. Second, one characteristic that forms Friar Laurence who he is that hes a holy man and is good friends with Romeo but advises him what could happen if he marries Juliet: "These violent delights have violent ends...." (Shakespeare Act: II Scene: V). Which is saying do you really want to marry this girl the daughter of your fathers great enemy. Another motive why friar is to blame is for coming up with the plan for Juliet to be with Romeo in Mantua: ¨Take thou this vial, being then in bed, And this distilled liquor drink thou off…No warmth, no breath, shall testify thou livest….Shall Romeo by my letters know our drift...¨(Shakespeare Act: IV Scene: I). The reason for this action is because hes the one who married the couple and second needed to get the newly weds together. My opinion for this action was it was an okay plan but needed to have a better way of telling Romeo faster.
