Job Description

Help children learn new skills. Learn manners, be friendly, learn to read and understand material. Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students varying needs and interests.

Working Conditions

You're constantly on your feet either running around to help your little ones, running around to plan activities, or just needing to make copies for the daily lesson plan. At least 25% is working at a desk. Being a preschool teacher can be stressful considering you have to look after quite a few of little preschoolers.

Personal Characteristics

Respect for diversity, excellent listening skills, positive reinforcement practices, patience and understanding, tolerance for different learning abilities. A preschool teacher needs to have a friendly personality and a desire and willingness to work with young children.

Earnings and Job Outlook

The median salary is $27,570 for all preschool teachers except special education. Employment for preschool teachers is projected to grow by 17% from 2012-2022, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Training/Education Requirements

An associates/bachelors degree or higher is required. After that you need to look into your state's requirements to earn your official teaching credential, like the Child development Associate Credential, state certification. Minimum of 2-4 years of schooling/training is required.
