The War Room
Prayer is a Powerful Weapon
Motherhood with Elizabeth and Clara
Elizabeth Jordan is a real estate agent, a wife, and a mother. Due to the immense amount of time spent at work, her husband has become the top salesmen at his company. With no time left for his family, Tony leaves Elizabeth to juggle all of her hats with little support. Between the two of them they have been able to provide a nice home in a well esteemed area of town, and their daughter, Danielle, has been lavished with anything a teenage girl could dream. This well respected couple may be successful, but they are mostly definitely not happy. Elizabeth wants nothing more for Danielle than for her to feel love and affection from her parents. She wants her to be able to spend time with her father and for all of them to bond as a family. The problem is that Elizabeth and Tony cannot seemed to get along when spending more than five minutes together.
As we get further into the story line, we meet Clara Williams. She is an elderly widow who lost her husband at a young age. She has an unshakable faith and has lived her life to serve others. She is an independent woman who has raised her son to be a fine husband and father. She is stable, independent, but after much coercing, she accepts her son’s proposal for her to move in with his family. She then hires Elizabeth Jordan to sell her house.
When first visiting Ms. William’s home, Elizabeth is bombarded with questions about her marriage, family and faith. As she tours the old home she comes across a secret room with walls covered in writing. These writings, as she comes to find out, are prayer requests and the answers to those prayers. After learning of the trouble Elizabeth is experiencing in her own home, Clara charges her to make her own prayer room. Elizabeth is skeptical but as things continue to worsen in her home she decides that Clara is right, and that her family is worth fighting for, but she cannot do it alone.
This story is really about trusting in what you cannot see. It is about creating a foundation for your family that is unshakable. Elizabeth is a young mother and is trying to take life day by day. She is aided by Clara who has lived a long life of love, strength and compassion while raising her son. She urges Elizabeth to see past the materialistic satisfaction and to stop living by her own strength. Elizabeth begins to understand that she to start seeing her family as a provision from God. She wants her to realize that they cannot be a successful unit with the help and work of the Lord. I think another thing that is extremely important in this book is that as Elizabeth is being built up and strengthened through Ms. Clara and the works of God, we see Ms. Clara start to fall away of her strong, independent state into a vulnerable role. We follow her as she agrees to move in with his family and submits to what the Lord has next for her. I think this contrast is important to see because we are able to see all of the different qualities and aspects it takes to be, not only a mother, but individual and human being. We are required to meditate on each season of life and adjust our goals and strengths accordingly.
