The Juliano Journal

Week of April 4-8

Dear Families,

Hello! I hope that everyone enjoyed a wonderful spring break. I was excited to see the students on Monday! We have quickly settled back into our regular routine. We have some very exciting things to look forward to in the next few weeks.

The PTO Reading Committee has created some wonderful activities to get the students excited about reading this spring! First, they decorated the hallways with a circus theme! The students will be participating in a 2 part scavenger hunt activity around the school. The program will culminate with each student receiving a free book at the end of the month. There will also be a book fair at school today from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. We are so thankful for the efforts of all the volunteers who have helped make the spring reading program a success!

Next Friday, members of the Crystal Lake South varsity baseball team will be visiting our school. Members of the team will be reading to our third graders and any answering questions they they may have.

The Third Grade musical program is coming very soon! The performance will be on April 20th at 7:00 p.m. The students are SO excited!

Finally, I wanted to pass along a very important date to put on your calendars. The third grade Economics Fair will be held from 9:15 a.m.-10:00 a.m. on May 27th. Look for more details to come!

Have a wonderful weekend!

curriculum

Language Arts

We continued our study of traditional literature by discussing folktales this week. We talked about what the characteristics of a folktale are and then we read some folktales together. In the next two weeks, the students will begin to write their own folktales!

In writing, the students will be writing a persuasive essay about a special relative. They have completed their graphic organizers and are now ready to begin to write their essays. We will spend the next week working on this project.

math

We started a new unit in our Math Expressions curriculum this week! This unit is all about measurement, time and graphs. We started this week by using rulers to measure items to the nearest 1/4 inch. Next we worked on solving problems involving liquid volume and mass. Next week our focus will be on solving problems involving time intervals.

science

We concluded our study of water this week by doing activities that helped the students better understand the water cycle. Next week, we will begin our last unit in our science program. In this unit, Ideas and Inventions, students will be using various techniques to see details about the world that would otherwise be difficult to observe.
