"The Buzz" - June 2017
The Montessori Lens
Dear Parents,
This month in the Montessori Lens, I would like to share with you an excerpt from an article I read in MontessoriLife Magazine, entitled: You Have To Be Carefully Taught, by Dane .L. Peters.
I was struck by the relevance of Dr. Montessori's observations on world peace in her volume of Education for a New World, Montessori says, "Our world has been torn to pieces, and it is in need of reconstruction....men are not sufficiently educated to control events, so become their victims". Were she still alive today she surely would repeat this sentiment but add that, in spite of or as a result of our advances in technology, the world she sees is still in peril.
Montessori believed that the problem of world peace can never satisfactorily be solved until we start with the child. (She said,) By taking the child into consideration we touch something common to all humanity. We cannot achieve world harmony simply by attempting to unite all these adult people who are so different, but we can achieve it if we begin with the child who is not born with national and racial prejudices." (Standing, p.157).
In these difficult times facing our world, Montessori's vision of Peace are ever important. As parents and educators the great responsibility of "carefully teaching" the future generations, is an incredibly vital task, one which each Montessorian holds sacred as it is the core of all our work.
If we can help nurture tolerance, understanding, and acceptance amongst our young, perhaps we can hope for a better future with a universal commitment to Peace for them and for our world.
In service,
Anita Ercole

What is a Montessori Bells Set?
"Young children are fascinated with the exploration of musical sound. The sensitive period for music is the same as that for language, so it's important to introduce the Bells in the primary years. The lessons follow the same sequence as the other sensorial materials: recognition of contrast, matching pairs, and grading a series. In addition, the Bells require specific lessons in care, handling, and playing." Source:MontessoriService.com
