I Reflection
Good Evening,
The year is flying by! These next few weeks can be trying. We have a long stretch leading up to the next week off. Working at Futures means that we must also deal with the stress of our jobs. A big part of this is staying connected with each other.
I encourage you to consider joining or rejoining our PBIS team. We have been a great team and will continue to be. Jenny and Michael led us through a year and a half of great planning and implementation. Kevin will help us going forward.
Speaking of joining: please do not isolate yourself! The job of teaching is inherently isolating, so it is important to recharge and laugh with colleagues. I have known many principals who experienced a huge shock when they became an administrator, that of losing their peer group of teachers. I have been very fortunate to have Lynn Scott and Rachel to work with.
Teaching can be lonely in terms of adult interaction. I encourage you to share ideas, check in, and communicate with colleagues often.
In times of stress we must all vent about what could be better, what is not being done. This is human nature. We ran out of food at one of our principal professional developments earlier this year . I heard grumbling and some loud complaining too. The person in charge overheard these comments. You could see it in her face that she was hurt. For three years she has ordered food, listened to feedback, and has done her best. It was probably just one comment (“Is it so hard to figure this out?”) that stung her.
I ask you to think of this: please assume positive intent. Assume it of your students, parents, colleagues, and leaders. Our jobs are hard. We wouldn’t be here if we did not have the best positive intent. I hope you have a great week with your students.
Brian
II What is going well, What needs improvement
What I thought went very well last week was how we are dealing with attendance. I need more data to really see the impact, but teachers were turning in their counts, parents attended SART meetings, and students who were usually late made sure I noticed that they were on time.
Needs improvement: After a long period with very few fist fights, we had a spike in fighting last week. When do these happen? I would say 75% of these happen at the end of directly after physical education or playing.
III Deliverable Items
Attendance report to Ida on Monday, and NNN tracker to Evodia on Friday.
IV Instructional
I’m pretty sure that with the amount of interruptions last week that Rachel may have not been able to follow up on the vocabulary strategies she was coaching teachers on. Please follow up by: making sure that you sign up for a time to work with Rachel if you have not already, or make up an appointment if it was missed.
V Behavioral
Do any of your students have a BSP in their IEP? (Behavior Support Plan) If they do, and you are not using one, that means that the IEP is out of compliance. This also means that if they are receiving major office referrals and you are not using a plan, I will have to work with you to create one. One way to think of this: if reading support was in their IEP we wouldn’t miss that.
Please see Kimberly Lum with any questions if you are not sure. .
Have a great week! Thanks, Brian
