DSA students rise!
Dear Staff,
This past Saturday, I was a witness to an event that five DSA students participated in at Suffolk University. The event that I’m speaking about is the Marshall-Brennan Moot Court Competition.
Briefly, the Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Project is a nationally recognized law related education program that promotes democratic engagement, constitutional literacy, and legal advocacy by placing talented upper level law students in high schools to teach yearlong courses in constitutional law and oral advocacy.
I’m extremely happy to report that Anaiza Abrya Lyes will stand as an alternate for the national moot court competition! Last year, an alternate won the entire competition. I have no doubt that Anaiza will do the same.
Several times I was moved to tears. Because of their persistence, hard work, preparation and competitive spirit – Suely Pontes, Jizmary Rodriquez, Christian Ramos, Jason Miranda DePina, and student coach Breedjully Barbosa gave incredible performances.
They competed against schools such as: Cambridge Rindge and Latin, New Mission, City On A Hill and several other schools that have been part of this competition for a number of years. On three separate rounds, our students came out on top!
Recognition must go to the two Suffolk law students who diligently prepared our students to argue the First and Fifth amendments like pros – Allison Eleey and Kellianne Summer are superb instructors. When you see them in the halls on Tuesdays and Thursdays, please thank them for the amazing hard work they do on behalf of our students. Also, DPC Chris Ponthokkan was instrumental in preparing our students in the final hours.
As teachers and support staff, we know that when we ask (expect and demand) DSA students to excel – to exceed beyond expectations -- they do just that!
I'm so proud of these students.
Warm regards,
Nancy Holley Hughes, Dearborn STEM Academy teacher

DO MY PART...
Custodians are not obligated by contract to sort trash from small recycle containers and recyclable materials from trash containers.
Please help out by encouraging students to empty all liquids and food scraps from plastic and paper goods to aid in making sure recyclable materials go to the right place.
Students will resume collecting recyclables next Friday but all of us can do our part by emptying small blue barrels into the large 90 gallon barrels to ensure they are taken out to the street on collection days.
Thanks on behalf of our dedicated students.

Dearborn STEM Academy one of 14 MA Schools Awarded Innovation Pathways Grant
BOSTON —
The Baker-Polito Administration today awarded more than $676,000 in grants to 14 high schools that have launched new early career programs for students, giving them experience in a specific high-demand industry through college coursework and internships with local employers.
Students are able to choose an area of study, such as information technology, life sciences or advanced manufacturing, and gain knowledge and insight as to whether the field is something they are interested in pursuing, as well as earn college credits at no cost to them prior to graduation.
The high schools that received grants today had their programs, known as Innovation Pathways, approved by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in Spring 2019 in preparation for fall enrollment. More than 1,000 students are expected to be enrolled in programs at these 14 high schools, and across the Commonwealth more than 1,500 students are enrolled in early career programs at 26 high schools.
“These early career programs provide students a head-start in learning and thinking about future career options so that they are able to make informed decisions about what they want to pursue in college and beyond,” said Governor Charlie Baker. “We are proud to continue to invest in these important programs that can shape a student’s future success.”
“Innovation Pathways are designed to build strong partnerships between high schools and local employers to offer students the knowledge and experience in growing, in demand industries throughout the Commonwealth,” said Lt. Governor Karyn Polito. “By providing more young people hands-on career experiences, we can increase their skills and engage with them in a new, innovative and exciting way.”
Lt. Governor Polito made the announcement while visiting Brockton High School with Education Secretary James Peyser.
SUMMER SEARCH SELECTS 12 DEARBORN STEM ACADEMY SOPHOMORES TO JOIN PROGRAM.
SUMMER SEARCH serves students with great potential, but unequal opportunity due to systemic inequities that stifle their ability to obtain post-secondary degrees, participate in the workforce, or gain financial stability.
Through a combination of mentoring and transformative experiences, Summer Search students strengthen the skills they need to thrive in school, work, and life.
IN ADDITION TO THE MENTORING, SUMMER SEARCH STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN SUMMER TRAVEL/TRIPS, ONE BETWEEN THEIR 10TH AND 11TH GRADE YEARS AND ANOTHER BETWEEN 11TH AND 12TH GRADE.
