A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Parents and Guardians:
We are looking at the end of school and what an amazing year it has been. We still have so much left to do in a relatively small amount of days. Thank you for the honor and privilege of working with your child. Day in and day out, we have the opportunity to work with such an amazing group of young adults and get to see the growth in them throughout the year. I look forward to seeing you at our various events coming up. From end of year celebrations, to age out ceremonies to Relay for Life, we have multiple fun events planned. Our every day teaching and learning is still going strong. End of year testing and report cards/progress reports are rapidly approaching.
Students new to ADAPT and STRIVE will be visiting with us soon to learn more about this amazing program.
Be sure to let your teachers, speech therapist and paraprofessionals know just how much you appreciate all they do for your family. Teacher appreciation week is the first week of May and our school council has some wonderful events planned to honor our staff. Thanks for you assistance with this.
As always, let me know if you have any questions and thanks for you help with a successful 2016-2017 school year.
Kind regards.
Dr. Barbara A. Martin
MIDTOWN POD
The end of the year may be fast approaching but the students in the Midtown pod are still hard at work! The students rotate 3 times a week to the different teachers in the pod for their academy class. In Mr. Turner's class, the students are working on 3 way budgeting where they are learning to independently budget for their needs, their wants, and their future expenses. The students are also holding discussions on demonstrating a good attitude at work and showing that they are willing to work when they show up. In Mrs. Rachel's class, the students continue to focus on self-advocacy skills. Students have finished their self-interests in relation to their vocational goals. They are currently working on understanding non-verbal communication and how we appropriately communicate our needs in our professional life vs. our friends/family. In Ms. Gloede's class, the students are finishing up how to read and understand medication labels and are beginning to move into how to use community resources to find extra curricular activities to do during the summer.
Every month, Midtown Pod gets together at Suwanee Town Center to socialize, interact with our community members at the various shops, and have some fun. The students have had the opportunity to fly drones courtesy of Mrs. Jill's husband, compete in races, and play various games. During vocational skills, the students are getting a wide range of experiences in retail (Burlington Coat Factory and Walgreens) and the food industry (Longhorn's, Taziki's Mediterranean Grill, Northbrook Middle School Cafeteria, and B.B. Harris Elementary).
We are finishing the school year strong but are all looking forward to the end of the school year and being able to relax with our family and friends!
