Mrs. Kelley's 1st Grade Class Newsletter
Please look in the Mustang Folder this upcoming Tuesday for an information sheet about our Arboretum Field Trip this Thursday, May 12th. Thank you for sending a disposable lunch for your child. Also look for a sheet about our upcoming school unit on camping. Each student will bring a baseball cap to school by May 18th. There is also information about our "Camp Mail." Thank you for helping us to make learning fun!
Please make a note that on May 9th-11th the Third, Fourth, and Fifth graders will be taking the STAAR test. Parents will not be allowed in the building to volunteer or eat lunch with their children. Thank you!
I will send home our last Scholastic Book order form in this week's Mustang Folder. This would be an inexpensive way to purchase books to keep your student reading over the summer! Please click the link below to order online. All orders are due by May 17th.
Lastly, I want to say a HUGE thank you to everyone for ALL of the teacher appreciation gifts, cards, treats, and OH MY THE CHOCOLATE!! I feel very loved. Your kiddos are like my own children to me...I love them and I love my job. Every day at work is an adventure! I will miss them so much when they move on to 2nd grade but I am very proud of how much they have learned. Thank you for trusting me with your little one!

Thur: No specials for Field Trip
Students have spent the last two weeks learning all about important inventors!
Kids put their learning together to make quilt squares for each inventor.
Do you know who invented the traffic light? Ask your 1st grader!
Kids earned LOTS of compliments from me and other teachers throughout the school. They filled the compliment jar with all of the fuzzballs to earn a popcorn party!
Way to go!
I can't resist the urge to use the party as a teaching experience so of course we wrote a Five Senses Poem about our popcorn treat!
After writing our popcorn poem, kids work with a partner to create another Senses poem about a different kind of food.
Drafting a Senses Poem about birthday cake!
What interesting details can we write about Chicken Nuggets??
Diphthongs are very challenging for young readers. We call them "vowel teams." This sweet pair practice with a reading passage.
Fluency and Phonics
Working together and listening to each other read is an engaging way to practice fluency. There is less pressure when you are working with one person as opposed to reading in front of the whole class!
Some of our students are like little "mommies" and "daddies." They encourage, praise, and help. It always warms my heart to listen in and hear them gently helping each other.
Fluency and Phonics
Phonics and fluency reading practice.
Kids also work on finding the words with vowel teams and highlighting them.
Will you listen to me read?
Kids use Skittles as "math tools."
Students sort the Skittles by color then make tally marks to show how many.
After finishing the tally chart, kids organize the data into a bar graph!
Of course after kids finished creating their bar graphs they ate all the data!!
Math Facts Master
We've been practicing our speedy subtraction facts! This little one is Super Speedy! Great job, honey!
Student of the Month
For the month of May, the specials teachers nominated students to receive the Student of the Month award. One of our "Kelley's Kids" received the honor for 1st grade boy!
I am so proud!
