In a Slump?

We know that the stretch between Christmas and Spring Break can be tough...on students and teachers! What a great time to try new strategies that fit in Design Question 5: What will I do to engage students? Specifically, let's take a look at three elements:

  • Element 25: Using Academic Games
  • Element 26: Managing Response Rates
  • Element 27: Using Physical Movement

Using Academic Games

Some key points to consider when using games:

  • Be deliberate in how you use games.
  • Inconsequential competition keeps the focus on the content.
  • Games in the classroom don't have to be complicated or chaotic.
  • Use small groups, timers and all your classroom management tools.

Managing Response Rates

Some strategies that fit into this element include:

  • Random names
  • Hand signals
  • Paired response (check out the ASOT in Action section for a real-world idea!)
  • Wait time

Using Physical Movement

The first column contains lots of ideas on movement and discourse, and you can click on those links from their document (not the picture). They even include templates for some of the strategies.

Bowie Elementary School--Wendy McCarty, 2nd Grade

Wendy McCarty, a second grade teacher at Bowie Elementary, uses a strategy to pair students up for discussion and processing time. She uses pairs of words, often connected to the content, to pair students together (along with a high five). Sometimes, the words are synonyms or antonyms. Sometimes, her students even help her come up with these words. She says it has added excitement to the lesson and loves it when her students realize the why behind the partner name choices she has used.
