From the principal's desk/Desde el escritorio de la directora:
Saludos Zarrow Families,
I can’t believe it is already October! It seems like we just got started and at the same time it feels like months have passed since we were all working like crazy, side-by-side, to get all of the classrooms and offices unpacked in time for the first day of school. I am so grateful for all of your help in making that happen! Without such wonderful support from our dear Zarrow families we would not have made it!
Then, right as things were settling in, tragedy struck my family. The outpour of love and support I felt from everyone, students, staff, and families was extraordinary. There are no words to express how much that means to me and to my family. I knew immediately that I was exactly where I am supposed to be. All the cards, flowers, e-mails, gifts, text messages, kind words and hugs that continue to flood in are an incredible source of comfort. The amazing plum tree that PTA planted next to the library in my mother’s honor is an overwhelmingly generous, thoughtful, and loving gift. The hope and dream that the plum tree will be the first “seed” in creating an outdoor learning space for Zarrow students and teachers is the most incredible legacy I could ever desire for my mom.
All of those emotions were followed by a whirlwind trip to Spain with our Zarrow ambassadors on their exchange adventure. What a successful trip it was. It was a time of healing, learning, and building relationships with our students as well as with Casvi administrators and staff which will aid in keeping the exchange program strong as well as help it grow. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Foundation for their support in making this trip possible.
Each day as I have lunch with your children or play four-square with them on the playground, interact with them in the halls, classrooms, at drop off and pick-up, I learn more and more about them. As I walk through and observe the day-to-day happenings in the classrooms I am filled with joy as I watch my rock star team of teachers leading our students through this wonderful journey. From sampling the butter that Pre-K made to watching 2nd grade retell in their own Spanish words a book that was just read to them, or watching 5th grade completing an amazing book all about the eclipse with great understanding, I observe daily the 5 values of TPS Destination Excellence that we are living every day at Zarrow: team work, equity, character, joy, and excellence. We are truly “living the learning”!
I could go on forever, but I have to save something for next month. We have come a long way in a short time. We have a long way to go. We are on this journey together. May it be the best adventure ever; for me it is already! I am truly blessed to be part of the ZIS family.
With sincere gratitude,
Sra.
Sra. Márquez

I’m excited to be a part of the Zarrow family in a new capacity as the School Counselor. I have been a Zarrow parent for four years and a Tulsa Public Schools educator for 24 years, 21 of those years as a Special Education Teacher and 3 years as a School Counselor. Both my parents were TPS Counselors and my great-grandmother was one of the first Special Education Teachers in the district. I attended all Tulsa Public Schools, Kindergarten through 12th grade; Disney, Foster, and East Central. I obtained my Bachelor’s Degree at Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri and I obtained My Masters of School Counseling degree at Northeastern State University, Broken Arrow.
In conclusion, at the end of the month we will be focusing on being drug free with Red Ribbon Week. Be on the lookout for more information about Red Ribbon Week in the weeks to come.

From the PTA president:
Thank you all for your participation in the fall fundraiser this year. Because of your help, we were able to raise $20,823.02 which will help pay for items like instructional funds for teachers, field trips, childcare programming for PTA meetings and science enrichment. Your contributions of time and financial support are vital to the continued success of our school and the results of our fundraiser indicate everyones’ dedication to that success. Thank you!
The entire school won a jeans day as well as a free dress day - dates for those will be established and shared with you all soon. Thank you, specifically to Kathleen Lockhart, a new kinder mom, who spearheaded this campaign.
Thank you also to Alicia Slyter and Shelley Faught who put together a great family fun night with EagleFest. It was so nice to see you all out there having fun with your families and visiting with friends.
Finally, if you are able to contribute to the Drive for Puerto Rico, the teachers will be collecting these goods until Friday, October 6th. This effort was initiated by the teachers in support of our teachers who have family in Puerto Rico and we will start getting items shipped as soon as it’s logically possible to do so.
Please email president@zarrowpta.org with any questions.
Thank you all, again, for all you do.

Join the PTA!
Hello Parents!
We are doing so well with the PTA Membership drive! We currently have 430 members! We just need 59 more to reach our goal of 100% membership.
Zarrow's PTA is a vital component is supporting this school. Carnival, book fairs, curriculum, class room supplies, field trips, spirit wear are all examples of how the PTA benefits the school. Joining the PTA helps raise money for the school as well as lets you be involved in all our decisions and support the things PTA does for Zarrow. You cannot vote in a PTA meeting without being a member. Joining PTA is a great way to be involved at Zarrow.
Anyone can be a member of our PTA – grandparents or other relatives, friends, neighbors. I encourage you to help us get other members of our community to sign up and be a part of our school. The cost is $6 per member. Out of that fee we send $1.75 to state PTA, $2.25 to National PTA, and Zarrow gets to keep the other $2.
This year we are bringing back the class competition. The class with the most students who have at least one paid member will win a special treat party. So far Sra TAmez's class has a huge lead! We will also have our individual contest. The student with the most paid memberships will win a prize. Competitions will end on October 24.
There are some blank membership forms in the kiosk by the office. There is also a copy on PTavenue at pt-avenue.com. Our school code is ZISPTA. You can turn in forms and money to the blue PTA box outside the office.
Let me know if you have any questions. You can contact me at membership@zarrowpta.org.
Thank you,Jessica Cross

Hello & Hola Zarrow family!
The crucial value of our PTA & Foundation have been on full display already this year! We have navigated through the loss of funding for several key curricula and staffing issues. Our Foundation worked together with the PTA to fund RAZKids and Imagine Math (formerly Think Through Math), splitting those expenses 50/50. In addition, our Foundation will fund Cursive Logic to make sure that continues in the future. These are extremely unique, key things that benefit your kids and the teachers view as essential to the long-term success & sustainability of ZIS.
Our Foundation Board has worked diligently to make sure our Exchange Program and all students involved are safe and protected. When there are needs or emergencies, our Board of EXCEPTIONAL people always responds responsibly and efficiently.
We want to welcome all 5 of our AMITY interns this year. Their additional expertise in the classroom makes our school better! Foundation is proud and happy to fund all of these positions again this year. Thank you also to all the host families for opening your hearts and homes!
We are continuing to advocate on behalf of Zarrow for additional resources and continuation of current policies. Please know that there are AWESOME people who are helping keep Zarrow great & continue the legacy of this wonderful institution!
We are looking forward to another FANTASTIC year at Zarrow! I want to personally thank you all for your support and volunteerism! If you haven't gotten involved, I encourage you to do so. There is a place for each and every one of you to be a part of this community....this family. I look forward to getting to know you all this year!
Keep Zarrow Great,
Jonathan Arnold
