Message From Ms. Backer, Our Principal & Mrs. Porter, Our Assistant Principal

Happy August!

The final summer days are upon us! Typically we do not send out two newsletters in one month, however, we wanted to ensure that everyone had the most up to date information.

Class lists were mailed out yesterday and should arrive late this week. We thank you for your cooperation and support as we work hard to make these educational decisions to place your child where he/she will flourish.

Thank you to all of our families that came out for our Summer Reading Challenge. We enjoyed visiting with our some returning families and meeting some new colts. Since this event was well received, we will be expanding upon this next summer!

We are only, TWO, days away from our annual Popsicles in the park. This year, we will be visiting several parks on one night and ending at CFES. Please see the flyer below for locations and times. We hope that you can join us!

Lastly, every year we welcome several new families to Christopher Farms. To help with the transition, learn about our amazing PTA, and fabulous traditions at The Farm, we will be holding a New Family night on Tuesday, August 27th from 6:00 - 7:00 in the Cafe. Parents will stay in the library as they will be introduced to the CFES administration - Ms. Backer and Ms. Porter, our fabulous school counselor - Mrs. Yoshida, and our outstanding PTA. Any students that come that night will spend the hour with our wonderful P.E teacher, Mrs. Roberston, learning some favorite PE games and getting a tour of the building. Below you will find a short powerpoint with some basic information to help get you familiar with CFES.

Summer is not over quite yet, so continue to soak up the sun, fun, and family time.

-Ms. Backer and Ms. Porter

Welcome our new staff to CFES!

Mrs. Christine Dalton - .2 Reading Specialist

I am Christine Dalton, a native New Yorker who has been living my best life in Virginia Beach for over 21 years. I am married to the most patient man on earth, Philip, and the mother of three, kind, young adults; Christopher, Meghan, and Jamison. This year marks my 24th year as an educator. As a classroom teacher I have served children in grades 1-6 in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Virginia. As an instructional specialist and school-based reading specialist, I have collaboratively worked with administrators, parents, teachers, and instructional specialists across our great division. With each experience, I am both a learner and a teacher. The important work we do requires many hands and hearts. I am both honored and humbled to lend mine to the Christopher Farms Family.

Mrs. Mackenzie Robinson - English as a Second Language teacher (ESL)

I’m Mackenzie Robinson, and beginning my 4th year of teaching ESL and my 14th year overall. I have two kids of my own, Ryan is 7 and beginning second grade at Princess Anne ES and Emily is almost 5. I stay busy with my kids, going to the gym, singing with my church’s band and teaching beginner piano lessons in my home. I’m very excited to be joining CFES this year and getting to know the staff and students!

Mrs. Adrian Greer - 2nd Grade Spanish Immersion

Mrs. Greer is originally from Cali, Colombia. I am a SoCal native and a military wife of 15 years. My passions are traveling, cooking delicious meals, hiking and taking care of pets while owners are away on vacation. I have lived in Italy and Japan and love both their cultures. I’m excited about joining the VB school district and especially the Christopher Farms school staff! I look forward to meeting all of you and collaborating an adventurous 2019/2020 school year!

Ms. Armada - 5th Grade Spanish Immersion

My name is Ana Armada. I was born and raised in Cádiz, Southern Spain. I moved to the United States of America when I was 18 due to my father’s military deployment tour. Falling in love with America and its education system drove me to pursuit my passion of becoming a teacher at Old Dominion University. I enjoy reading, music and crafts. Because I have a big curiosity for Science, I also enjoy watching documentaries. I love hiking: I have hiked most mountains in the beautiful Appalachian Mountains of Virginia. But my long-life passions are teaching and children. I feel blessed to be able to give it my all as a teacher at Christopher Farms Elementary.

Mrs. Cindy Matney - 1st Grade Teacher

Hello, my name is Cindy Matney! I am so happy to be back at my home school, Christopher Farms! I opened the school in 1997 and, after a thirteen-year move to the other side of VA and three years at Bayside 6th, I am returning to the same room... Room #1! I have my Masters in Reading from Radford University and I cannot wait to work with the fabulous staff at CFES.

Mrs. Heather Armstrong - Kindergarten Assistant

My name is Heather Armstrong and I’m very excited to be back onboard full time at Christopher Farms! I started my teaching career in 1998 at CFES teaching 1st grade after graduating from Longwood University and earning my Masters in curriculum and instruction from UVA. In 2004, I had my first child and left to be home with her. In addition, I had 2 other children and raising them kept me away from teaching for 14 years! After jumping back in to subbing, I was offered a part time SPED position last year and I caught the teaching bug again big time !! Big time!! I’m so excited to be a kindergarten assistant this year and dive back into early reading development, which is totally my jam!!!

Mrs. ShaCori Conyers - SPED assistant

Hello my name is ShaCori Conyers I have been working with Virginia Beach City Public Schools for about 8 years. I started out as a job coach then I became a special ed assistant 5 years ago. As a job coach I worked at Laskin Road Annex then once I became a special ed assistant I worked at Corporate Landing Elementary for one year and I have been at Seatack Elementary AAD for the past 4 years. I am looking forward to becoming part of your team and learning new things.

Mr. Manuel Hernandez - Strings Teacher

My name is Manuel Hernandez II. I normally go by Manny, my name is a little hard to pronounce. I started off as a substitute in 2014 and have been working in some capacity with kids from VBCPS since 2004. I just recently graduated with a Music Education degree from Norfolk State University and have been working with strings since 2015. I've been a professional performing musician since the age of 15 and my goals are to use music to inspire great dreams and hard work from all of my students.

Mrs. Laura Perez - P.E Assistant

Laura Perez is originally from Colombia where she studied at the University of Quindio and earned a bachelor's degree in Financial Administration. She has been working in the school system over 2 years as a substitute, growing valuable teaching experience. Her passions are working out at the gym, half marathon running, camping, hiking and being active outdoors. She is recently remarried and has an 11-year-old son.
