PTO News
Contact the PTO: HPEptoVolunteer@gmail.com
Our next general PTO meeting is Tuesday, February 13th at 6:30 in the school cafeteria.
Do you enjoy volunteering your time and talents to benefit others? Is the planning of activities something you are interested in? Would you like to meet other parents and get more involved in the HPE community? Are you interested in shaping PTO activities at Harrison Parkway in the 2018-19 school year?
If the answer to any of these questions is yes, please consider sharing your time and talents with the HPE PTO! There are numerous opportunities available from a collaborator on an event, all the way up to the Executive PTO board. Come and check out our next executive meeting (January 2018) and see for yourself. We'd love to have you "drop in"!
If you are interested, or have any other questions, please feel free to reach out to hpeptoboard@gmail.com with any questions you may have.
Save Your Boxtops over the winter break! We will be having a competition again this spring.
Smile While Shopping
If you shop on Amazon or at Kroger, check out these completely free and zero effort ways to raise money for the HPE PTO. The prices are the same, the service is the same, you shop the same way, but a portion of the purchase price will be donated to the PTO, that’s it!
On Amazon, just go to smile.amazon.com/ch/20-0114174 to link your account to the PTO and then check out using smile.amazon.com everytime--you cannot access this through an app so fill up your cart and then open a browser to check out or shop directly on smile.amazon.com
For Kroger, login to your online account or create one using the Kroger Plus Card number you already have or get a new one. Then go to www.kroger.com/communityrewards and enroll in Community Rewards. Search for “89638” and select “HARRISON PARKWAY ELEMENTARY - PTO # 89638.” Then scan your Kroger Plus Card or enter your alternate ID every time you check out just like you always have.
ASE Volunteers Needed!
The ASE committee is gearing up for another great event this year! ASE will be held Tuesday, Feb 13 through Friday, Feb 16. Registration will open on Thursday, Jan 25. Information on available classes and how to register will be sent home next week.
To make this a successful event, we need YOU! The more volunteers we have, the smoother the event runs. Volunteers receive free childcare for younger siblings and early registration for their After School Explorers. You can sign up to be a volunteer on the Harrison Parkway Sign Up page: http://signup.com/go/ftnqUEk
Please contact Kate Ziino, ASE Chair, with any questions at hpe.explorers@gmail.com.

Winter Weather
As colder weather has arrived, please note that students go outside at recess when the temperature (and wind-chill) is 15 degrees or above. While teachers may reduce time outside on colder days, they will take students outside following these temperatures guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatrics. It is important that students arrive to school with appropriate dress for the colder weather such as long pants (no shorts), coats, hats, gloves, and/or scarfs. Thank you for double checking that your child is making appropriate clothes choices each day!
Weather Delays and Cancellations
As temperatures and conditions are prone to fluctuate, we encourage families to review their weather plans.
The leadership team at Hamilton Southeastern Schools is doing the same and will examine a combination of factors when considering a delay or closure on inclement weather days. It is not an easy decision. We not only weigh the effect of the temperature on students walking to and standing at bus stops, but we must also think about the predicted snowfall, ice, rain, wind and wind chill etc... Cold temperature and winds can also impact bus engine starts and cause possible delays that can leave students standing longer and in some cases without access to vital school resources. Therefore, we consider each weather situation separately, monitor reports and consult with our transportation department before making a decision.
Hamilton Southeastern Schools is committed to the safety and well-being of all students and endeavors to make decisions regarding delays and closures as early as possible. Please stay tuned to the following sources for the latest weather-related school news:
HSE Skylert
In the event of a delay or cancellation, all families will receive an automated message from the HSE Transportation Director via our Skylert system. The message will arrive by both a phone call and an e-mail. Parents also may opt to receive a text alert through Skyward/Family Access. To login, please click on the following link: https://sis.hse.k12.in.us/scripts/wsisa.dll/WService=wsEAplus/seplog01.w
HSE Social Media
Social media has become our fastest way of sharing school news. Weather-related school updates are available on the HSE Twitter feed and Facebook page. Students, families and residents are encouraged to join our more than 10,000+ “followers” at www.twitter.com/HSESchools and join our Facebook family at www.facebook.com/HSESchools. Not on Twitter or FB? Access both directly from the HSE website at www.hse.k12.in.us.
Local Media Outlets
Television and radio stations remain a traditional way to share school weather announcements. HSE posts school delays and closures to the following media outlets:
- WQME – 98.7 FM
- WHBU-WERK-MAX, WLBC – 104.1 FM
- WEDJ – 107.1 FM Radio Latina
- WIBC – 93.1 FM
- WSYW – 810 AM
- WISH-TV 8
- WXIN (Fox 59 & CW 4)
- WRTV (6)
- WTHR (13)
Two-Hour Delay-- In the event that the school district deems a two hour delay is necessary, school will run from 10:55 am-3:40 pm. Breakfast will not be served, but lunch will be served. School doors will be unlocked at 10:40 am. Buses will run 2 hours behind, so if your student normally gets on the bus at 8:30 am, then a 2 hour delay means that he/she will get on the bus at 10:30 am.
Before and After School YMCA Program-- The YMCA before and after school program will be open during their regularly scheduled hours on days that Hamilton Southeastern Schools are experience a two-hour delay. When Hamilton Southeastern Schools are closed for weather related issues, the YMCA school care is closed as well.
Attendance Line Voicemail
If your child will be absent from school, please call the HPE Attendance Line by 9:00 a.m. at 915-4210. If you know in advance that your child will be absent, you may call the attendance line's voicemail anytime and leave a message. If you know your student will be absent for more than two school days for any reason other than illness, we ask that you complete a Prearranged Absence Form (available in the HPE office) at least one week prior to the absence. If you notify your child's teacher of an absence via email, you still need to contact the office (by phone or email) to ensure that attendance is marked appropriately.
Student attendance at HPE is vitally important. Please make every attempt possible to plan appointments and vacations outside of school hours. Regular attendance improves student performance and is expected as an integral part of our state mandated School Improvement Plan.
Transportation Change During the Day
Occasionally, parents must make unplanned transportation changes during the school day. All telephone calls must be received by 2:00PM. This is to allow enough time to accurately deliver messages to teachers, as well as time to confirm the change if necessary. Please do not call the school after 2:00PM to make a transportation change except in the case of extreme emergencies.
HPE Cafeteria News
As a reminder, please make sure your child's lunch account is current with funds. I send out email notices thru Skyward and you may sign up in Skyward to receive alerts as well.
When sending in money, please put the money/check in an envelope with your child's name, student ID number and teacher to assure funds are put in the correct account. No nicknames, please.
All lunches include an entree, milk, two vegetables if desired as well one fruit. This is a Meal Deal. Lunch entrees are the hot lunch, Chef Salad, turkey and cheese sandwich, pizza pack or PBJ sandwich. Lunch menus along with nutrition information can be found on the website for HPE under the Food Service tab.
In the event of a two-hour delay, breakfast will not be served.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
Thank you!

A Note from the Nurse
Accidents happen during the day such as bloody noses, toileting issues, muddy puddles at recess, food/milk spilling at lunch, etc.... The clinic has a limited supply of clothes, so please pack an extra change of clothes (socks and underwear too!) in your child's backpack for the unexpected mishaps. If I do not have anything that fits your child, you will be receiving a call for a change of clothes to be brought to school, since your child cannot return to class or ride the bus home with soiled or wet clothes. Thank you for your support!
Lost & Found
Volunteering and the Background Check Process
Parents/visitors to HPE must have a background check on file with the school (including watching the anti-bullying video and completing the video survey) in order to volunteer in the school or to have lunch with a student. The link for the background check information can be found on link below at: http://www.hse.k12.in.us/ADM/parents/volunteering.aspx
The background checks are conducted by a 3rd party company, and there is a $13.00 fee for processing (payable online at the time of the application). Once completed, approved background checks are valid for a period of 3 years. Applicants will be notified via email when their background check has been completed and they will also notify people 30 days before their background check expires.

Community Bulletin Board
On February 1, 2017, HSE Schools launched the HSE Schools Community Bulletin Board. The CBB is the new home for school-corporation approved flyers from community organizations. The CBB can be found on the HSE Schools district web site below the scrolling slide show. It is below the Need Help/Emergency Concerns section. As a result of the addition of CBB, community announcements will no longer be featured in our newsletter. Instead, those items will be posted on the Community Bulletin Board. Each week an updated link will be provided here in the newsletter to access the bulletin board so parents can view upcoming community events.
