As we begin 2021 we wish to thank parents for getting students to school on time. We know all parents want their children to have great days at school. Starting those days on time is an excellent way to begin. Please continue to get students to school on time. Doors open at 8:20 a.m. Classes begin at 8:30 a.m.

Report Cards Go Home This Week!

Your Superstar will be bringing home his/her report card this week. We hope you will take the time to sit down with your child and talk about what growth and learning have occurred since the beginning of this school year. We have much to celebrate when it comes to good work and effort. We will continue to have high expectations for all of our students. If you have questions about your child’s progress and achievement, please feel free to contact us. Remember that we are your partners when it comes to your child’s education!

School Schedule for the Weeks Ahead

Moving into our second week of Yellow Status, A-Group students will attend in person on M/T and B-Group Students will attend in person on Th/F. When students are not in person they should follow their classroom schedule for logging on to Webex, with all students logging in for a virtual SEL Lesson on Wednesday (1/13) at 8:45 am.

NO SCHOOL - Martin Luther King Jr. Day - January 18th

A reminder that there will be No School for Students (Teacher In-Service Day) on Monday, January 18th, 2021, in recognition of the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday. We encourage students and families to consider taking time to learn more about Dr. King and, if able to do so safely to consider ways to participate in the annual day of service promoted on this day each year.

2021 - 2022 Kindergarten Registration Begins February 1st

Kindergarten Enrollment for District Residents: February 1 - March 5

Do you live in the District and have a child who will be ready for Kindergarten this fall? Do you know of other Westside residents with children who will be ready to start school in August?

Kindergarten enrollment for 2021-22 begins February 1. Parents of eligible students should go to to begin the enrollment process as early as possible on or after February 1st.

Students entering kindergarten for 2021-22 must be five years old by July 31, 2021. Parents may opt to hold their children out of kindergarten for an additional year. However, Nebraska state law mandates that a child who reaches six years of age prior to January 1 of the then-current school year must be enrolled in school.

Requirements for Early Admission to Kindergarten

In accordance with Nebraska Statute 79-214, the Westside Community Schools allows for admission of children residing in the District as early entrance kindergarteners through a locally designed testing program. Children of District residents who wish to be tested for early entrance must turn five between August 1 and October 15, 2021. For further information regarding early entrance to kindergarten, please call 402-390-3303.

Student In-District Transfer Requests for the 2021-22 School Year

If you are a District resident who would like your K-6 child(ren) to attend an elementary school other than the school that serves your attendance area for next school year, you must submit a completed In-District Transfer (IDT) Request form to the Office of Student Services for review.

The District gives priority to families living within the District ​prior to ​placing Option Enrollment applicants who reside outside the District. We must receive a Student In-District Transfer Request form no later than ​4:00 p.m. on March 15 ​for your request to be considered prior to our placement of Option Enrollment students.

IDT forms are available at the ABC Building and our District website.​ Click here to complete the form electronically.​ An IDT request form must be completed for any child starting kindergarten next year who has one or more siblings currently attending a school outside their home attendance area. Transfers are approved or denied based on available space and other resources. If you have questions about the in- district transfer process, please call 402-390-2107.

Kindergarten Enrollment for Non-District Residents

If you live outside the District and have a child eligible for kindergarten who has a sibling currently attending a Westside elementary school through the Option Enrollment program, you must submit an Option Enrollment Application. ​Westside’s Office of Student Services must receive Option Enrollment Applications no later than 4:00 p.m. on March 15​. The application form is available at the ABC Building (909 S. 76th Street) and our district website.

Under Option Enrollment statutes, first priority for admission is given to siblings who seek to attend in the District where an older sibling is already enrolled, provided an Option Enrollment form is submitted by March 15 ​and ​provided that there is space available in a requested building and grade level. Pick Up Meals Available on Wednesdays at Swanson!


Just stop by our kitchen door from 9 am -1 pm on Wednesdays! Signs will be available to direct you to door #10.

  • K-8 learners can pick up meals on Wednesdays from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Swanson Elementary School; 410 South 86th Street

  • Additionally, Westside Nutritional Services will be offering extended hours for pick up, Wednesdays from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM for..
    • All K-8 Learners can pick up free meals each Wednesday from 4:00pm-6:00pm at Westside Middle School
    • Grades 9-12 Learners can pick up free meals each Wednesday from 4:00pm-6:00pm at Westside High School

All students/parents/households picking up meals will receive breakfast and lunch for either three days, for those students attending in-class learning during the “Yellow” status, or five days, if your student is attending Extended Campus At Home learning.

Due to a grant, regular school breakfast and lunches are FREE. If you would like your child(ren) to eat breakfast at school, they may arrive at 8:15 a.m.

•Please note: If your child orders extra of the entree or anything a la carte there will be a charge for those items.

Recess and Falling Temperatures

Recess will be held outdoors, except when extended exposure to the elements is inadvisable or when the Principal determines it to be otherwise unsafe. Students will not have outdoor recess when either the air temperature or wind chill factor is 10 degrees fahrenheit or lower.

First Friday Spirit Day!

Each first Friday of the month is Swanson Spirit Day. On this day we all wear our Swanson logo wear or school colors, blue and white, to show our spirit. We begin our day by saying the Swanson Pledge together. It’s a fun day filled with terrific Swanson spirit! Our next First Friday Spirit Day is Friday, February 5th.
