Mrs. Nagy's 1st Grade Class
First Grade is One in a Minion!
Helloooooo parents! Just a few reminders to get us through the end of our month.
- Spelling Lists - The students seem to like and are doing well with our spelling tests. These words will focus on the vowel sound and consonant sounds we are focusing on this particular week. We will spend some class time reviewing and practicing these words, but I recommend also practicing these at home.
- Snack Chart - The snack chart for the month of October was included in your child's folder on Friday. Please take note of your child's particular snack day for the month. We only have 16 students, so your name may rotate on the calendar twice in a given month. Please no peanuts or peanutbutter products, please!
- Book order -Coming home FRIDAY this week will be a packet of book order flyers for your enjoyment. This is a great way to keep your child reading....BRAND NEW BOOKS! It also earns us classroom dollars to buy new books for our classroom library. Please see the link below for easy ordering or send your order to school with a check made to Scholastic. This will be the book order for October and November. I will send one more book order before Christmas!!! The orders need to be returned or placed online by November 3rd.
- ARP - Students are doing a great job giving AR a try. This program always motivates many of the learners to read. Please feel free to send in books from home that you have read with them to take a test on at school. I am so very proud of each and every one of my first graders that have tried this program! YAY!!!! *** A SPECIAL CONGRATS to LUCAS BROERING...he has hit 75 points! WOW! This is an unbelievable feat for a first grader!!! This means that Lucas has read and taken tests on 150 books.***
- PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES - Thank you to all the parents that made the time to come and meet with me! It was so nice to have the time to talk about each and every one of your children. Communication is the key to your child's success. Always feel free to reach out to me if there is ever a problom or concern.
- Halloween Party - Our Halloween party is quickly approaching! SVDP will be having our Halloween Parade and Party on Friday, October 27, at 1:30 which is next Friday! Your child should come to school dressed in church day clothes. We will change into our costumes around 1:15. If your child needs help or you would like to lend a helping hand, please feel free to come to our classroom then. Please LABEL all uniform clothes and costume parts to help if things get separated from your child.
Book it – In addition to the AR program at the school, our class will be participating in the Book It program sponsored by Pizza Hut. This is another fun way to encourage children to read!!!! Please be on the look out each month for our BOOK IT challenge at the beginning of each month! They will receive a coupon for a personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut once they return their paper to school! We will do this each month through March! l sent a little more information in their folder, too! *This is not required, but I am hoping for every child to participate!
EPIC reading app - At school, the students are learning to use an app called EPIC. This app provides a huge selection of books for the kids to read, books they can have read to them and even educational videos. THEY LOVE THIS APP! I love books, and this is the next generation of books for our learners. Coming home in your child's folder is some more information about this app. It is free to schools, but costs a monthly fee for home use. A 25% discount is being offered if you sign up using the link provided by me.
MAP scores - In your child'd folder was a copy of their MAP scores. This is a test we will be taking 2 more times this school year. The hope of this testing is to help identify strengths and weaknesses in instruction and individual students and to help tailor instruction more effectively. More information will be provided at a meeting on October 23rd at 6:30 in the school cafeteria.
Have a spook-tacular weekend!

MATH
For the first part of our school year, the main focus of our GO MATH program is addition and subtraction. We learn about the many ways we can find an answer, including using manipulatives, using a hundreds chart, drawing a picture, mental math, using a number line, making a tens frame, even using our fingers. Not every strategy will work best for your child, but we learn the many different ways so your child can experience and discover the best way for them to be a STEM problem solver.
We will also continue to work on graphing, number sequence, skip counting and shapes (3-D and 2-D) throughout other areas of instruction, TOO:)
