Weekly Memo for Washington Elementary
Principal Post:
Thank yous, appreciations, and celebrations:
- Thanks to our wonderful PTA and RATS team for flexibility in planning and hosting our Run/Walk event. This is our primary fundraiser for the year and we need all we can to accomplish the goals of PTA.
- Thanks to all who made McTeacher's night a success. We had a great turn out and just in change donations in the hats we had over $300 dollars. The calculation of sales will come soon! Thank you, thank you, your students were thrilled to see you!
- Congrats to our kids, I had a parent stop me Friday afternoon to say that all of the students behaved so well at Run/Walk and we so kind and respectful.
- Thanks to Michelle B and Marianne for walking our students to the corner each day
- Thanks to our SLE assistants. I know your days are longer than most when you ride the bus, although we don't have an answer for that yet, we are working toward it.
- Thanks to those of you who had data conferences last week, your dedication to your students was evident. Look forward to the others this week
- Thanks for a great spirit week, we know our kids love to see us having fun and playing along
- Congrats to Katie Simms who will complete an interim for Billie Begley in a few weeks when she has knee surgery. She will also return for the interim for Carrie Murray in March when her little boy arrives!

FYI and Reminders:
As you may know, we have had great concern about our walkers who cross at Bellingham and Harvey Brooks. Parents have called (or staff members) nearly daily sharing concerns. Friday, Jim Nash agreed to come watch the corner to see what the problem might be. He came immediately back up to meet me and stated that he didn't get nervous easily, but he was absolutely terrified that we might have an injured student. Some of our kids aren't even looking, or using the crosswalk, they just dart out into traffic. He is asking that Captain Rourke to come this week to help us brainstorm a more permanent solution, but in the meantime, we will need a staff member to keep the walkers (those who go home alone) at the door to leave WITH AN ADULT to walk as a group to the corner and cross all at once. We plan to meet with the walkers at 2:30 tomorrow to have a serious and informative meeting. We have hopes of KPD coming to train them more formally. In addition, we plan to share this information with parents of walkers. Tomorrow, Michelle B plans to walk the students down to the corner, but this may change as we make more permanent plans.
As a reminder, time off directly before or after a school break must have superintendent approval. This should go through the principal. In addition, time off for personal reasons may be declined if more than 10% of staff is already scheduled to be off that day. Also remember, you have 1 hour or under of time during a day in which you can be out of the building without taking leave. This is a courtesy and should only be taken if you have coverage for your class by an assistant. You should not double up classes or request another teacher take your class. You should also notify and sign out in the office when this is a necessity. Calling Candice to record it for you is sufficient. Lastly, please remember to save personal time for your children's awards days, graduations, etc. You cannot attend these and get back to school within an hour. Although we want to be family friendly, in order to be equitable, you should adhere to these policies.
We cannot get the WIDA survey to work, I have asked Pam to get us a paper copy of a signature page.
- Social committee is "Booing people" again this year. If you find your mailbox holding a bucket with a treat, please refill and pay it forward to another staff member. Please check to person's name off the list. Also, last year, we planned for cross school partnerships to help us focus on levels of appreciation, that will continue this year
