Check-In Benchmarks
For the 2018-2019 school year, Lee County Schools will participate in NC Check-Ins. The NC Check-Ins will be assessed in the 6th-8th grade ELA for this school year. Below you will find additional information about the NC Check-Ins.
- Students will be administered three NC Check-Ins and a stand-alone assessment at the end of the year. The end of year assessment will be the standard end-of-grade (EOG) assessment that includes embedded field test items.
- Several reports will be available to teachers following each administration of an NC Check-In. These reports provide individual student data as well as an overview of how well the class performed on the Check-In items. Parents will also receive an individual student report on their student’s scores for each Check-In. Following are descriptions of the reports available to teachers and parents
- This is a paper- pencil assessment for the 2018-2019 school year.
2018-2019 NC Check-In Standards
Check-In Testing Specifications
The NC Check-Ins are aligned to the NC Standard Course of Study (NCSCS) for English Language Arts, adopted by the North Carolina State Board of Education in June 2010.
Each ELA/reading NC Check-In will contain 22-24 questions. Students will see four-response- option multiple-choice questions. Each question is worth 1 point.
-
Each ELA/reading NC Check-In will include three selections. The charts below provide the anticipated number of selections (i.e., poetry, informational, literature) for each NC Check-In by grade level.
Formative Assessment- Data Review.
The NC Check-In assessments should be used as a Formative assessment. A Formative assessment, is a range of formal and/or informal assessments given by teachers during the learning process in order to modify teaching and learning activities to improve student attainment. These assessments should not be used as a grade.
Teachers will have access to the student books and data within five days of administering an NC Check-In and submitting student responses, school administrators and teachers will have access to student, class, and school-level custom reports generated by NCDPI custom scoring and reporting software.
Teachers also have access to students’ test books (for paper-and-pencil administrations) or an electronic copy of the NC Check-In (for online administration).
All assessment materials will be returned to the Central Office on the following dates
Check-In 1- 1/18/19
Check-In 2- 3/15/19
Check-In 3- 5/17/19
Data reports will be provided to you at the school and district level. These reports provide a summary of performance expressed as number and percent of items answered correctly disaggregated by student, classroom, and school by standard assessed. These reports are intended to support formative uses at the classroom and school level
It is highly encouraged that during grade level departments meetings and PLC meetings that teachers dive deep into the NC Check-In student books to find trends and question stems.
Steadily Increasing Complexity
NC Check-In 1, 2 and 3 will assess the same ELA/reading standards. All students are expected to be able to comprehend texts of steadily increasing complexity as they progress through a grade. The text complexity of the selections chosen for the NC Check-Ins study will increase throughout the year.
