Knightly Update August 23, 2020
Edition Vol 9 Issue 5
Hello. I hope you had a nice week and are finding ways to escape this heat. I enjoyed having the opportunity to visit various virtual classrooms again this week. It is fun being able to see our students, say hello, participate in the chats, and answer questions. The kids are doing a nice job and I very much appreciate the work and effort the teaching staff is putting forth developing their lessons. Great job everyone.
As a site, we've realized there are some elements offered when we are in-person that we haven't been able to effectively provide in a virtual environment. Because of this, we will begin engaging with our students in Enriched Learning Opportunities (ELO's) on Wednesday's (first school-wide ELO will be September 2). ELO's will provide students with opportunities to choose to meet with teachers of all subjects for enrichment, review & intervention, engage in small group opportunities, work with members of our College, Career & Counseling Center, participate in various support groups, work on assignments with peers as well as individually, focus on test prep (ACT, SAT, AP, school assessments), prepare college applications, review & understand scholarship opportunities, develop and address four-year plans & goals, and engage with various clubs and other school organizations. Students will still be responsible for checking in to the appropriate classes to report their attendance, but no new material will be shared in order for students to get questions answered, focus on various components of content they might be struggling, take time to complete tasks and assignments, and prepare/study for upcoming assessments along with the other opportunities provided via ELO's. We are excited to be able to offer more for our students in our virtual environment and encourage our students to take advantage of Wednesday's ELO's to continue to learn, master material, and to grow.
Please join me in congratulating our school's custodial team, under the direction of building manager Lucy Johnson. Each year, district personnel evaluate the cleanliness of all CUSD schools. I am very proud to share that our custodial team earned a 99% on their evaluation - the highest cleaning score our school has ever received! The team worked diligently all summer cleaning, disinfecting, sanitizing, and painting, while focusing on ensuring our students will return to a clean, safe campus when in-person instruction resumes. Congratulations to all our custodians on a job extremely well done! We appreciate what you do for our students and school.
Please remember to review your child's academic progress via the Infinite Campus Parent Portal. Mid-quarter grades will be posted on Friday, September 4. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the appropriate instructor. Have a very nice week. Don't forget it is our Quarter 1 Virtual Spirit Week Knights! Have fun participating. As always, feel free to contact me if there is anything I can do to help your child. Keep up the great work and enjoy your week!

Knights in the Spotlight
Congratulations to senior Blake Su on being selected to be a member of the Arizona Governor's Youth Commission. Blake will be working with other high school students throughout the year. Established in 1989, the Governor’s Youth Commission (GYC) is a diverse body of Arizona high school students from across the state. The purpose of the GYC is to engage youth through innovative programs, events, and campaigns that effectively serve their communities in the areas of distracted driving prevention, education, human trafficking prevention, substance abuse prevention, and teen dating violence prevention. Congratulations Blake on being selected to be a part of this distinguished group of students!
Blake and his fellow members are already working on their first project in conjunction with the Arizona Department of Health Services. AZDHS is offering free masks to students and families in need and the students within the GYC are working to share this information with as many people as they can! Below are more details on the program. Thank you Blake for sharing this information with our school community and for helping to protect as many individuals as possible during this pandemic.
Important Advanced Placement (AP) Information
If you are a student in an AP class, you should have already received your class-specific join codes, joined your AP Classroom, and created an AP account. Remember, students that already have AP accounts (most sophomores-seniors) should utilize the same account information from previous years. Teachers have posted AP information in their CLASS STREAM or ANNOUNCEMENT SECTION of the Google Classrooms. Please click on the videos below and review the attached documents for additional information.
In addition, please make sure that you are aware of the following information and deadlines below.
- August 10, 2020 - Students begin creating their CollegeBoard accounts and registering for tests using the join code(s) from their teacher
- August 19, 2020 - Begin making payments for AP test(s)
- October 26, 2020 - All AP exam payments due ($95.00 per test)
If you are a continuing AP student, please use the account that you have previously created to access AP classroom and register for test(s). If you taking AP Government or AP Economics second semester, you will register in January. Please visit our ACP Counseling website for more information. If you have questions, reach out to your teacher or Dr. Vezzosi.

Class of 2021 Senior Pictures
OPTION 1: Schedule an appointment to have your photo taken at the Mesa studio with Lou Coopey before September 1st. (Please see page 2 for more information.)
- To do so, go to www.loucoopey.com then click on the large red banner across the top to book your appointment. To ensure the safety of all seniors we have put in place new COVID protocols for the photo session.
- Social distancing, masks, and hand sanitizing will be required of all customers and staff. All procedures will be as contact-free as possible.
- Dressing rooms, rest rooms and seating areas will be closed to the public.
- Only seniors, six at a time, with appointments will be permitted to enter the studio. No one else may accompany them.
- All studio services beyond the sitting: scheduling, ordering and paying fees will be conducted online.
- A $40 deposit will be collected at the time of scheduling. This, along with a $10 complimentary coupon will be applied to each account, giving each senior a $50 credit toward the purchase of portraits and services. After 30 days, the $10 complimentary credit will expire. The $40 remains on account and can be used for any senior portrait purchase.
- Senior sessions will include 9-14 poses on a variety of backgrounds.
- The studio will not provide the usual loaner jackets, ties, shirts and drapes. Seniors will be required to come wearing the school-prescribed dress for senior portraits.
- All post-sitting contact will be done online, including choosing the yearbook pose, ordering and any payment. Each senior will receive an online access code for their images and $50 credit. • Cap & gown photos for graduation included. They are sanitized on site in commercial dryers between appointments per CDC sanitation requirements.
OPTION 2 (does not include cap & gown): Take senior yearbook photo on campus during School Picture Day (date TBD). For those who do not pick Option 1, we will have an on-campus photo day. This option does not allow for cap & gown photos.
- Students must be dressed professionally when they arrive at school that day. This includes a collared shirt with tie and dress shirts, suit coats, dresses, blouses, or other more formal dress.
- There will be one campus day. If you miss it and want your photo in the yearbook, we refer you back to Option 1.
Seniors may not wear jeans, shorts or t-shirts in their yearbook photo. This is formal attire. No casual attire is permitted. All seniors will take a sitting and standing picture that will both be in the yearbook. Boys must be in business casual or formal attire wearing pants and a button-up shirt. Jacket and tie are optional. Girls may be in slacks, a skirt or a dress no shorter than knee-length. Tops cannot be off the shoulder or spaghetti strap. You may not bring props or pets to your photo session due to the current restrictions of COVID-19.
