Before a Hurricane
Before a Hurricane, It is extremely hot and windy. Before nightfall, it should be cloudy and moist. You should have received a warning by now that a hurricane is coming your way. If not, and you recognize the symptoms, tell an adult and evacuate as quickly as possible.
How does it happen?
Hurricanes begin in the warm, moist atmosphere over tropical waters. The atmosphere gathers heat energy from contact of ocean water above 80 degrees farenheight and with a depth of about 200 feet. Then moisture that evaporates from the warm waters enters the atmosphere and starts to power the new hurricane. The hurricane forms clouds and winds near the surface that spiral air inward. Thunderstorms form, making the air hotter and forcing the winds to rise higher into the atmosphere and the spinning to increase. That is how a hurricane forms.
A Hurrican'es wind speed
One way Hurricanes are classified by is by their wind speed.
Cat. 1: Wind speeds of 74-95 MPH
Cat. 2: Wind speeds of 96-110 MPH
Cat. 3: Wind speeds of 111-130 MPH
Cat. 4: Wind speeds of 131-155 MPH
Cat. 5: Wind speeds greater than 155 MPH
Category 5 is the most dangerous hurricane that there can be. As you can guess, Category 1 is the least dangerous hurricane.
The Smell of a Hurricane
A Hurricane smells like rain. It can also smell like salt because the floodwater is ocean water and ocean water is salty. If you were hit by a piece of flying debris then you may smell your blood.
What does a Hurricane look like?
In a hurricane you will see floods. In these floods you will see pieces of junk floating around. You may see
- cars
- half submerged houses
- roofs
- lawn chairs
- boats
- road signs
- Palm trees
You will also see rain and really dark thunder clouds. You might also see lightning in these dark, dark thunder clouds. Occasionally there will be tornadoes in a hurricane too.
A Hurricane sounds like.....
In a hurricane, you will hear the ocean roaring, the rain pattering on your roof, the wind whooshing and screaming, and possibly people screaming, too.
Mama, I'm scared!
In a hurricane it is damp and wet. It can be very warm or very cold, depending on where you are in the hurricane. If you are in the water, it will be very cold because the water has come from the ocean. But if the storm has just begun, it is likely to still be very warm. If you are a normal person, then you will be scared of the hurricane and what it can do.
