The role of the Internal Budget Team is to make budget recommendations to the Superintendent, not to make programming decisions. As part of this budgeting process, the Internal Budget Team recommended the reduction of funding that supports PYP, MYP, EL, and STEAM training, staffing, and support. The Internal Budget Team did not recommend the elimination of these programs.
While funding to support training and staffing are being reduced due to the budget shortfall, the Teaching and Learning Department is working on plans to help support schools through this transition. PYP/MYP/EL/STEAM principles of inquiry-based instruction, student voice, transdisciplinary learning, science, technology and global thinking have been and will continue to be great strategies for our students and staff. Teaching and Learning, in collaboration with schools, will work toward creating a vision for ensuring that the PYP, MYP, EL, and STEAM will be able to continue in the future.
The Teaching and Learning Department is working closely with the International Baccalaureate® Organization to continue essential components that will provide a pathway for the continuation of PYP and MYP. We are also exploring ways to support the continuation of EL and STEAM programs in Beaverton.
Friday, May 31st Dress like your Hero Day!!!
Hero Day - a HERO can be anyone! Emelia Earhart? Dumbledore? Super Man? Captain Marvel? Martin Luther King? Harriet Tubman? Ghandi? Mrs. Pleau?
Cultural Night May 31st 6-8pm
We’re looking forward to this year’s Cultural Night, Friday, May 31. We are looking for a few good people to make a booth about a country of your choice. You may have particular family ties to the country or maybe it’s just someplace you’ve always dreamed of visiting!
We’re thinking each “station” could have a game or activity particular to that country, a snack or food item for people to try, native decorations, a list and pictures of famous people from the country, plus a flag and a map. Children will have a punch card to fill by doing or tasting something at each station. For entertainment, we’d like to invite some dance troupes or other performers.
Do you have any other ideas or resources for us to make this night special? Please let us know at events@satocommunity.org. Thanks!
Sato Readers! Book Exchange and OBOB Celebration!
Book Exchange
All of the books on your bookshelves have been read. Your kids know every word. Some are favorites, others were read but now are overlooked. Perhaps the kids are getting older and would like more challenging reads.
Your outgrown children's books could become another child's new favorite!
How it works:
- Send your gently used children's and middle grade books to the library between Monday, May 20th and Tuesday, June 5th.
- Every book contributed will be good for one ticket toward a new-to-you book Thursday, June 6th -Thursday, June 13th.
- Each child may contribute up to 5 books.
- Board books through middle-grade fiction and non-fiction will be accepted for the exchange.
- Encyclopedia sets and almanacs will not be accepted.
- Books must be in gently used condition (e.g. no rips, tears, writing/coloring, unpleasant odors, excessive yellowing)
- Coloring and activity books, kids-meal books (e.g. Wendy's or McDonald's), and sticker books will not be accepted.
Please note, the selection of books will depend on the content which is contributed, so tell your neighbors and get ready to get your hands on some great new reads just in time for summer!

2019-20 Class Lists and Parent Input
Assigning Sato students to their classes for the next school year is an important responsibility. Our goal is to place students in a learning environment in which they can succeed. Classroom teachers and specialists provide important input into classroom make-up. They spend time with students in the classroom and other school environments and are aware of student needs, abilities and learning styles, as well as friendship considerations. For this reason we have an extensive process by which we collaboratively consider the following criteria as we organize classes for next year:
Balance between boys and girls
Combination of students who may have a positive or negative influence on each other’s learning and play
Balance of students with individualized education programs, academic achievement and second language needs
Balance of social maturity
We recognize that as parents and caregivers you are your child’s most important advocate and teacher. We want to offer you the opportunity to provide information on your child that may not be directly available or observable in the school environment. You may provide relevant educational information about the specific needs or learning characteristics of your child by completing the form on the next page. We are requiring that all input be in writing in order to protect the integrity of our process. Please do not request a specific teacher. Individual teacher requests cannot be considered because student balance is first priority in class make up and because we can have changes in staffing and the number of classes at grade levels over the summer. Your information sheet will be taken into consideration while the team makes classroom assignments. While we work to honor the information you provide, the final placement decision is made by the school.
Thank you for your patience and support! The student information form is due back to the front office by Friday, May 24th. Classroom assignments will be available at the end of August.
Attached below, but can also be requested in the front office.
