Third Grade Homework
Things Parents Need to Know
Read Every Day
It is important that you read to your child and listen to your child read.
That is why I have provided your child with books to read as well as a Poetry Folder. Each week, a new poem is added to it. Look below for more information about HOMEWORK.
The Reading Folder
This is how your child's reading folder looks. It should be brought home every night. So your child can read with you and to YOU. The HOMEWORK inside should take no more than 20-25 minutes to complete.
What's inside?
The pocket on the far left will have books in it. These books are to be read by your child. Your child should read to you for at least 15 minutes each evening. The middle pocket holds your child's Poetry Folder. The pocket on the far right holds your child's Reading Journal. There is rarely homework to complete in it. When there is, I will include specific instructions.
Poetry Folder and Word Book HOMEWORK
Reading poetry increases reading fluency. First read the new poem to your child. Then read the poem at the same time as your child. Then have your child read the poem to you. The word book contains vocabulary words taken from the poems. Have your child remove the drawings inside it and then match them up to the correct vocabulary word. Ask him/her to read the words, definitions and sentences on the pages to check for accuracy. This should take no more than 5-10 minutes.
A Note About After School Programs
The homework in this blue folder will NOT be completed in the after school programs. This homework is an opportunity for you to help your child become a better reader. Read to your child. Read with your child. Listen to your child read.
